suspicious follicular neoplasm

My doctor called yesterday and said the fine needle biopsy revealed a suspicious follicular neoplasm on my thyroid. She want to do surgical pathology and remove the lesion and the thyroid lobe where the lesion is. Seems kind of drastic, especially if there's no confirmation at this point that the lesion is cancer. Can anyone help me understand this?

You may need to request so-called "molecular testing of the specimen" which can be useful for detecting follicular variat of papillary cancer. In most cases follicular neoplasms must be removed with entire lobe to check for "vascular invasion" which means the cancer.

No one has mentioned 'molecular testing of the specimen.' I'll ask about that. They keep talking about surgery and lobe removal.
Thanks for responding.

Do you have an ultrasound report?  If there are calcifications or vascularity, or the nodules are solid, your chances of cancer are higher.  If you can post more information, that might be helpful.

I don't know too much, as I was given results over the phone and was totally unprepared to even ask questions. But I do know there is a large 'fluid-filled' nodule and another that has 'blood flow' (solid).  The one with the blood flow (1.5cm) is the one they biopsied. It's the one with the suspicious follicular neoplasm diagnosis.  Ultra sound showed several smaller nodules on the right lobe. These two are on the left.

I just discovered that i have suspicious follicular neoplasm and will be scheduled for thyroidectomy. Very scared to find out about the result and what would be the side effects.

Lucky to have supportive people around.... :)

I just had my FNA results come back as spicious for a follicular neoplasm, the doctor said I had traces of cancer. I need a total Thyroidectomy to find out if it's cancer or not. In my opinion id rather know than deal with the what ifs. P.s I have two nodules that were biopsies one on the right about 2cm and one on the left which has over taken the gland.
