thyroid nodules

I have a heterogeneous exho texture of the thyroid with a 1.1x0.7x0.6cm slightly hypoechoic, ill defined nodule within the right side of the isthmus no definite calcification, mild vascularity is demonstrated.  I have a ill-defined Isoechoic nodule 1.6X1.1X0.9 cm, vascularity is also noted, there is a mild hypoechoic halo around this lesion I also have a 0.3 cm with the inferior pole of the left lobe. All are indeterminate. I am asuming interdeterminate means inconclusive which is why they are going to do biopsies. What does heterogenous echo, hypoechoic, ill-defined vascularity, isoechoic and hypoechoic halo mean. Does hypoechoic halo mean i is definitely cancer. thanks lorraine

Hi Sally,
They could still be definitely benign!! Internal vascularity raises the suspicion of malignancy but there are a significant number of benign nodules that have that and are still benign. So don't worry yet.

greater than 1cm, illdefined borders, mild vascularity does that mean they are definitely cancer or could they still be benign.

There are several reasons the biopsy is necessary:
2 nodules are greater then 1 cm
The nodules have ill-defined borders
The nodules are having internal vascularity
The benign nodules are mostly having well definite margins and no internal vascularity
The isoechoic means it is reflecting the same amount of ultrasound waves as the surrounding tissue, the hypoechoic means it reflects less waves then surrounding tissue.
The hypoechoic halo is actually the sign of benign nodule, however the ill-defined margins and internal vascularity are making the nodules suspicios
