worried after phone call

hi again all,

ok, i just recieved a phone call from my oncologist, which totally took me by surprise so of course i didn't ask any questions about what she said like i should have done!

she said they had reviewed my case and histology etc at a multidisciplinary meeting today and could i come in for an ultrasound scan to assess if there is anything that may be still remaining, she also said that i would have to go over to southampton to have this done as they have special equipment, which i don't understand cos we do ultrasound scanning on the island! unless it's a special kind of ultrasound??????

The only thing they do in southampton that we don't is the RAI uptake, i thought she could have been talking about this but she definately said Ultrasound scan! (and she's a consultant, she should know the difference between ultrasound and uptake scan!)

the only question i managed to ask was 'will the RAI ablation still go ahead in 3 weeks time?' and she said 'oh yes, as long as there is nothing that needs to be dealt with first'

any idea what any of this could mean?????

Thankyou,

Helen  x xx x

Thankyou everyone :-)

i got the letter through the scan is on tuesday, it said it's an Ultrasound aspiration!

not sure what they're gunna aspirate, my whole thyroids gone, but have still got some large lymph glands under my jaw???

she never said anything about aspirating anything over the phone! as long as they don't want to operate again!

atleast it's not too long a wait to try and find out whats going on :-)

I am an ultrasonographer and without a doubt there are different levels of experience in different areas of ultrasound.  Also, a very high frequency linear transducer is needed to scan the thyroid as compared to abdominal or obstetric ultrasound.  If they don't scan thyroids routinely then I would go where she suggests.  It does sound a little bit unneccessary if you have had a total thyroidectomy?.  Call back and ask questions.  When the Drs. have case conferences and everyone is throwing out ideas/suggestions then sometimes the suggestions are more than what you really need.  Question, question, question... it is not too late.

Good Luck! W

I do not know for sure but there are different levels of u/sound equipment available .. as when preganant .. so maybe it is the best one avail to be certain nothing else is there?  That is just awesome team medical mgmt!

Keep us posted .... this is wonderful they are taking your case quite seriously to be certain you get the BEST possible care!

hi hun - yes it is always a shock when they 'phone you out of the blue but I agree with stella.  I think it is great that they are checking everything before they carry on and it could be that maybe the machinery is the same on the island but prhaps they want someone with a more experienced eye to look at your scan OR someone more familiar with thyroid/neck stuff.  thats why I had my second ultrasound with a different radiographer.  He works alongside my surgeon a lot with his thyroid patients so he was the best person to take a very close look at my neck.
Try not to be frightened or worried. easier said than done I know!
The other thing that happens here in the uk is that the teams meet regularly to discuss current cases they often don't meet for a few weeks at a time.  Thats why I am having to wait 2 weeks until a decision is made about me and whether to still do a Completion.
It could be that now your case has come up for discussion - like me - they decided to cover ALL the bases before moving onwards.  I'm sure it is nothing more than that.
Good to get your txts the other day.  I have been really busy but will be in touch soon.  I am loving this weather though!

I think they may be just crossing t's and dotting i's to make sure there is nothing that will delay RAI.

I don't know - I have never been in this situation - just an optimist guess. for good luck :)
