hi all. my dad was warded suspected of viral encephalitis. he initially had very high fever and confusion. he also had memory problems and couldn't recognize people including himself. he found it a struggle to form words and sms gibberish .
after 3 days he was out of the high dependancy unit . after around 1 week his fever turned to low grade fever. he still has extreme fatigue and muscle weakness. he preferes to use sign language than talk. and find it hard to concentrate on reading the paper or watching tv, even his favorite sports channel. walking is challenging and after a 'trip' to the loo he'd be exhausted and continue sleeping.
doctors have done, MRI, lumbar puncture, blood test, EEG and could not determine the type of virus or bacteria .repeated test are being done. meanwhile, he is basicly on acyclovir drip everyday. now is about 1 month since the onset of his sickness. we are still waiting for the definate diagnosis. am wondering is there anything, ANYTHING at all that a family member can do while the doctors to their investigation? i mean, is there anything that can aid the diagnosis or speedy recovery? i read that some cases can be fatal. issit safe to say it is not in my dad's case since he seem to be improving? please do share any insights. would be most appreciated.
