At home treatment for Trigeminal Neuralgia

I have found that Orajel puts out a new product for severe pain that you can rub on the inside of your cheek or gums. And while you are doing that, take a tube sock, fill it with rice and tie it off and microwave it for 2 minutes. The heat seems to take the pain away and its gone in 15 minutes.

Orajel definitely doesn't touch my pain when I get it.  My TN strikes like lightning.  Currently the treatment the neuro has me on is Keppra.  It has helped but I hate taking any medication on a regular basis.  I tried to cut it back gently but the TN hit again.

Not looking forward to winter because that is when TN is worst for me.

Tramadol works wonders stopping the pain. I am glad my husband thought of it.

Today, I had a really bad day with the TN, I finally had to take Tramadol to get the pain to die down where I could handle it. Heat and orajel just wasn't working today. I have made an appt with an ENT to find out what is causing the extremely sharp pain I am getting in my temple area along with the TN.

Do you all have classic TN  or atypical TN? I have tried the orajel it works for awhile. But was wondering about the rice sock. Heat works for you?

Before my rhizotomy, when I was in pain and taking medication (Trileptal), it helped the pain doctor and myself if I kept a journal of when the pain occurred, what kind of pain (jabs, jolts, etc), and what triggered the pain (if I could figure that out), along with when I was taking my meds.  The meds have to be kept at a constant level in the bloodstream -- and this helped the doc and me to figure out when to take the doses and when I needed to increase my meds (when I was weaning onto and off of the meds).

Maybe something like that could help you out.

Hope your pain level lessens!

My TN has been acting up now for 5 days and it *****. It only comes on after 1 p.m. and sometimes not until after 4 p.m. It last for about 3 hours and then disappears until the next day. This pain is so weird the way it comes and goes.

For the last 3 days my TN has been acting up, I've been putting orajel on the inside of my cheek and a hot rice sock on it.

I know the feeling! I had a smoothie. Yikes. There is NOTHING as bad as a brain freeze except a brain freeze with TN!

Glad the Orajel works for you. Didn't for me but everyone is different. I live for my rice/lavender bean bag. I've made the sock ones and others for back up, small versions. Those eye masks work wonders also, they fit in the palm of your hand and are the right size for a cheek, hardly noticeable when you are out somewhere and need it.
