7 year old with a recurring undiagnosed fever

My seven year old was hospitalized about a month and a half ago for a fever that lasted 7 days. The doctors did extensive testing blood work, ct scan urine analysis but came back with nothing. he was under iv anti biotics while he was there because his blood work was abnormal, had signs of an infection I was told. But after the 4 days he was sent home because he went 24 hours without a fever. which was good. but about 3 weeks later he had another episode of fevers with no other symtoms. And at the moment he has had a fever up to 104degrees for 4 days now. And the more I think about it the more I begin to remember how He's always had this problem. Since he was a baby. Fevers with no other symtom. It's just lately that they have begun to last longer than 4 days. I don't know what to do. The doctor told me if this fever lasted more than 10 days. he was going to reffer him to infectious desease. I'm scared though cause my child already went through a lot of tests, and I don't know what other types of tests they're thinking of doing on him. On the other hand, I really would like to know what is causing these fevers. I'm going to start keeping really good track of the cycles. I always just thought it was a (virus running it's course) what the doctors told me everytime I would bring him in with a fever. and then there were times obviously that it was diagnosed, ear infection, strep. But I don't think this fever episode or the last were just random viruses. I think there is something else that's causing them. Question is, what is it?

Just keep a close eye on the temp.  Ten days seems to be a long time to wait before referring your feverish child.  At that point, the child should be hospitalized and ID (Infectious Disease) consulted, especially with your child's history.  I know you do not want to see your child suffer from all the testing, etc., but frequent fevers with no explaination..scary.

I guess I am just the kind of person who wants an explaination/answers especially when it is pertaining to my child now.  The physician should be more interested in finding the answers/solutions to your problem instead of intensifying your fears of your child becoming a "pin cushion."  Just my two cents.

I am glad he is doing better though.

Keep us posted.

Thanks for your comments. Here's the update. His fever lasted 4 days exactly!  I don't know what to do. I'm happy he's better! But I wonder when his next episode will be. I'm hoping he doesn't get one again. His doctor told me to wait and see if any of his fevers lasted more than the 10 days in order to be reffered to infectious desease. He said that some kids just react with a fever for a virus that other kids just don't. So, not sure. I don't want my child to become a (pin cushion) which was what his doctor said he'd become if they kept pushing to see if they could find something. I kinda agree. I love my child and so I don't want to put him through something he doesn't need to go through. Anyway for now he's better! I'm still going to keep track of his temparature cycle, to have the data if needed. Another thing, he seems to have a lower average body temp. around 97. Thought it was kinda odd. until I found out both my husband and I have lower body temps. HMMM??

I agree with Londres, get the referral and take him as soon as you can. Having a fever that high for so long can't be good for him.  Get a second opinion!  As I have been finding out now that my daughter is sick, the doctors don't know everything and they generally aren't going to spend time researching and finding answers for you.  This webste has been an amazing resource.  Good luck with your son and keep us posted!
