Low Ferritin

I have low ferritin and normal hemoglobin. I have been anemic (hemoglobin 8 and hematocrit 24) on and off since early 2005. I recently had a sleep study because of my fatique and normal hemoglobin. For eight hours I had PLMS then one hour of deep sleep. I will repeat the sleep study when my legs calm. I am taking mirapex that does not help and will see a neurologist to prescribe a different drug. I have also had an endoscopy and colonoscopy which showed a large hiatal hernia and an adenocarcinoma polyp that was removed. Occult blood tests have been negative. Chemistry Panel is normal.
Can my low ferritin be related to my PLMS or the hiatal hernia? Would it help to see a hematologist or another specialist?

A low ferritin level is most commonly caused by iron deficiency.   I agree with the colonoscopy and upper endoscopy as initial tests.

Yes, a low ferritin can also be associated with PLMS.  This is due to the fact that PLMS is associated with iron deficiency anemia.

I am not aware of a hiatal hernia being associated with a low ferritin level.

Looking for the cause of the iron deficiency should be done, either with a GI or hematology referral.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

I have been battling low ferritin levels for years. I am 39 have 2 children. For about 9 years since my youngest was 18mths I have had intermittent episodes which could last up to a month of feeling tired, lethargic, inability to think straight, lightheadedness and more. I also get heart palpitations and sore tongue. Im not anemic and my Hb is normal however my Ferritin is only 10. Can these symptoms be a result of the ferritin.I'm desperate I've had absolutely everything possible checked out and have seen more"ologists" than you can imagine. You advise would be appreciated
