My Nan's Legs

My Nan has varicous veins that she has had for ages. However its been getting really bad, she started of developing Plebitis and now she keeps getting really bad leg ulcers that cause her a lot of discomfot. She goes to her doctors but they just treat the ulcer and wait for her to come back again with another ulcer and treat that too.
SHe is in a lot of pain and she can't walk really well anymore. She's only 57 and she can't move around a lot. I was wondering if there was any tests the doctors could do to see why she keeps getting leg ulcers and if there was any treatment she could have.

Sorry to hear of your Nan's problems.  I suggest the best move is to push for a referral to a vascular specialist.  It sounds somewhat like the blood supply to her lower limbs is being compromised, and there may even be tailor made treatments that can be offered to improve her circulation.  Regarding the uslcers, there is a wealth of research into products which aid recovery, such as silver dressings and even the use of maggots to eat the necrotic (dead) skin - seriously.  You are right though to be concerned as to why she is getting the ulcers in the first place.  Ask for this referral, there is enough going on to warrant it.  Meanwhile the use of support stockings can reduce the pain and swelling in her legs and it important for her to keep her legs moving regularly, to encourage the circulation.  It would be presumptious of me to jump in and make a provisoinal diagnosis as I don't have all the facts (plus am not a doctor), but do think a vascular specialist would be able to make that diagnosis, or at the very least offer better treatment than she is currently getting.
