Mystery rash on legs after Bactrim ?
My mother recently was treated with Bactrim for a cyst between her buttocks. She began the meds on Monday morning, and by Tuesday evening she had 3 starburst, silver dollar sized rashes on her legs -- 2 on one leg, 1 on another. She also complained of a very sore tongue. Her MD advised her to stop Bactrim, and by Friday's follow-up, they had diminished only slightly.
The MDs in the office had no idea what this was, and stated it was atypical reaction to Bactrim so they were concerned with an infection. Blood work sent off yesterday for CBC, and ASO (strep titer) -- can we get any insight as to what this may be? Is it likely to be a reaction to the meds, or perhaps something else going on in the body? I am uploading 2 images of the legs as well. No other symptoms, such as fever, cough, sore throat, or GI upset.
The doctors all went back and forth on this, so it would really be appreciated to get some expert advise. Thank you !

I did not imply that she might be deficient in B12 and folate-she may even test high in both (in their regular form).
This detail is key to the entire issue on hand.
The B12 and Folate MUST be in the Methyl form (Methylfolate and Methylocobalamin) as I mentioned in my original reply, since the underlying issue may have to do with deficiencies in these forms, related to low methylation/MTHFR mutation.
This does not rule out a deficiency in the regular forms, but the red flag in this case was the severity of her reaction, indicative of unregulated high levels of histmamine, consistent with SAMe and methyfolate deficiencies.
If taken in the recommended doses, there should be no toxicity issues,what soever, but please note that such deficiencies do take time to correct.
Increasing doses does not necessarily corelate with increased absorption and efficiency.
The Methylation Cycle is an important biochemical pathway that manages, regulates or contributes to most,- if not to all- of biochemical reactions & vital bodily functions!

Niko -- Thank you for the detailed summary. So, in essence, are you saying she may be deficient in B Vitamins ? This seems to be an allergic reaction to the med, although if taking a B Complex could alleviate the Sx, that would of course be wonderful. (I am a nurse)
Are you a pharmacist? MD? DO? Please let me know your qualifications. Taking a B-12 vitamin, or even B Complex daily, can do no harm -- so perhaps it is worth a shot. Let me know more if you may. Thank you !

No great mystery here though to my opinion.
The anti-folate action of Bactrim, probably instigated this reaction.
You see folate, when methylation processes are not impaired, is necessary for SAMe production, which in turn is responsible for the breakdown and elimination of Histamine, among numerous other essential functions.
(It helps regulate more than 200 enzymes-and their activities- in the human body)
A supplementation trial of Methylfolate, may serve her well, since there's a good possibility of her being deficient and/or having methylation issues, which could be underlying causative factors for other symptoms and conditions even if her folate levels test normal or high.
(Methylfolate and also Methylocobalamin are the neurological forms of Folate and Cobalamin B12. Their deficiencies are due to lack of proper methylation and/or MTHFR gene mutations. To test for deficiencies in these,only a separate Homocysteine test would reveal this)

Thank you, as of this morning the spots are beginning to get smaller and lighter! I will keep watch. PS* My mother is 60 years old
I am not a dr.. But I would say that it is a reaction to the med also. I know that I am allergic to that med also and that I broke out in a rash all over my body from it. I would just stick with what the experts say. Sorry that I couldn't be more help. Maybe someone else knows more then I do
