Involuntary snorting noise when swallowing?

My husband makes a very loud, sudden involuntary snorting noise most of the times that he sniffs and swallows, or sometimes just when he swallows. It sounds like it's coming from his nose, and it's the worst when he's sick or dealing with allergies, but still happens when he's entirely well. He says he's had this problem since he was a kid. It doesn't seem to bother him because he's never done anything to get it looked at, but it really bothers me because of my misophonia.

Can you help me figure out what's causing it? I can't find any information on it online.

It may have been something he learned as a child to soothe allergies or itchiness he's had.  I make a strange sound to itch the back of my throat and my son who has all year allergies also makes a strange sound and does it kind of out of habit.  So, it could be something as simple as that.  He may have a tic as well.  Those can be vocal and simple vocal tics are noises. I know a boy who sounds like he is gasping for air and it has a squeal to it, it's a tic.  ?
