head and neck swelling

i fell off a ladder and landed on my back hitting the back of my head on concrete causing  a laceration that had to be sewed up. along with that i had a concussion. that was four days ago. since that time the back of my neck is staying stiff and swelled. also, the laceration site that was sewed up has swelled and my head is starting to hurt more. is this commonplace?

Having your head banged and suffering from concussion is very serious.

It will take approximately 6 weeks or more for you to start to feel more normal.  Any symptoms like headache that you didn't feel before, memory problems, vomiting, swelling and any vision problems should be seen to urgently.

There is still a risk of haemorrhage within the skull and because of this it is wise to seek medical advice.

Get someone to take you to the hospital, don't go on your own.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Injuries such as you describe can result in a lifetime of pain and misery. Commonly there is a misalignment of the cervical vertebra, resulting in what is called a subluxation injury. The symptoms of pain go away and come back in spades 10 to 12 months later. If this happened on-the-job make sure you file a workman's compensation claim. Don't hesitate to go back and see a physician. In general both an MRI and an MRA are indicated, both of the brain (MRA and MRI) and the cervical vertebra (MRI). I sympathize with you. Take it very easy for the next month.
