Whats going on with my heart?

Does anyone have a answer???

I am a 37 year old male 6'2 230lbs. in pretty good shape. For the past 2 years I've been having these strange feelings with my heart. Every so often it feels like my heart skips a beat, flutters and takes my breath away.I get this light headed dizzy type of feeling. If I am lying down and get up quickly I can feel my heart pounding in chest and can also feel the heart beats on the sides of my head almost like a type of pressure or headache that matches my every heart beat,It last for a couple a seconds then goes away. I constantly feel like a shortness of breath but only on the upper right side of my chest. I have gone to many doctors ( primary care and cardiologist ) and they have all said that its not really normal but that what I was feeling was actually an extra heart beat and that it was common, and not to worry about it.( easy for them to say, there not going through this) Its driving me crazy!  It can come on when I am relaxing at home or when I am in the middle of a conversation. I go through day wondering when is the next one coming. The fluttering last for a couple a seconds. It takes my breath away for just a second and then returns to normal. Sometimes when I make a sudden move it also happens. I used to smoke, but i quit a year ago. I stopped drinking anything that contains caffine. But nothing that I do seems to correct this extra beat problem. This past February I was admitted into the hospital with LONE AFIB. I had all types of test done ( EKG - X-RAYS -  ECHO CARDIOGRAM - BLOOD WORK - CT ANGIO ) after about 20 hours in the hospital my heart retuned to normal by itself and the doctors could not give me a reason why it happened. They told me that everthing was normal with my heart and that they didn't find any reasons for the AFIB. Since then I've been to all types of doctors with no resilts. I now have been diagnosed with asthma and all types of allergies. I was told to take an inhaler for the shortness of breath ( try it for about a month, but didn't help so I stopped ) .I also now take allergy shots every week. Its just all very fustrating because, I feel like this and no one has an answer. Can it be my allergies? Can it be stress? I do have a high stress job ( Bus driver in NYC ) Any answers, thoughts or comments? ANYONE....

Hello, I have been experiencing the same thing you have described here.  Mine started out very minor last year and have slowly gotten worse this year to where it is quite often actually.  I know how scary this is!!!  I went to my doc and he did the echocardiogram and said it was normal.   Well.....la di da!!!!!!  I don't care that it was normal ...cause it is not normal that someone has these kind of symptoms and doctors should go further with their testing instead of just stopping right there.  I am so fed up with docs that I don't know what to do.  None of us should have to be on here trying to dx ourselves but just look at us!!!   Anyway, I think mine could be due to my vitamin d defiency or possibly an std even though all stds come back negative (I am not convinced).  Have you had both of these things checked ?  If not you should!!!!  keep me posted!!!!!!

Hi.  If you had mitral valve prolapse they would have seen it on the echocardiogram.  Do you have a copy of those test results?  You should get a personal copy of all your results to take to any new doctors you end up seeing.  Here is a page that describes some of the causes of lone afib:

http://www.afibbers.org/atrial_fibrillation.htm

Many times they can't find a cause, however It could be dietary or due to a medication.  Stress can cause palpitations.  And yes it could be due to a problem in the heart like mitral valve prolapse, but the echo is the test to diagnose MVP.   It could also be due to a medical condition not originating in the heart.  Have you had blood tests?  You should have your thyroid tested.  Hyperthyroidism could cause both the afib and the palpitations.  Hypoglycemia can also cause this, as well as electrolyte imbalances.

My suggestion is to see a good internist and get thorough blood tests.  Also you should keep a symptom journal.  Take note of when you have these palpitations and the symptoms that accompany them.  When you have the palpitations, write down what you ate, any medication you took and what you were doing when it happened.  Note as well anything in your schedule that was out of ordinary, like extra stress or lack of sleep or missing a meal.  These notes will help you and your doctor pinpoint the cause.

On a side note: I get palpitations too with the symptoms you are describing.  They are related to my migraines (we think) and so far are believed to be benign.  I have also had afib when on certain medications to treat the migraines, but once I stopped the ineffectual meds, it stopped happening.  Afib can be very scary.  Many people get palpitations and the cause can't be determined, but it's nerve racking never the less.  It doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong, but it's important to rule out medical problems.  Good luck and try to not add anxiety to the mix. This will make diagnosis more complicated and exacerbate your symptoms.

Im not a doctor or anything but it sounds to me like you have mitro valve pro lapse, which is somewhat common. I have this and have all the symptoms that you have listed. Even though it is an uncomfortable feeling it is not something to really worry about, as I have been told.  Look it up on the internet to read more about it, take care:)
