THIS WAS A DOCTORS RESPONSE TO SOMEONE ASKING THE SAME!

Hi
Welcome to the forum!
Yes, multiple joint pain could be due to arthritis, especially since it runs in the family. An ESR around 43 merely indicates a chronic disease in the body like arthritis.
Multiple joint pain can be seen in hypothyroidism, low Vitamin D levels, Low Vit B12 levels, anemia, Hasimotos thyroiditis, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, SLE, electrolyte disturbance particularly those involving calcium and magnesium, parathyroid gland problems, chondrocalcinosis, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. All these can raise the ESR too. I think you should discuss these possibilities with your doctor (rheumatologist when you see him). It is difficult to comment beyond this without examining. A comprehensive investigation is required keeping all the points in mind.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

With the old formula for maximum ESR: (age +10 ) : 2  it would be (87+10): 2 = 48.5  So ESR at 43 would be OK!
However, with newer studies, ESR normal values have been set at 23 for her age group (based on a large number of... healthy subjects. Hmmm, how do you find enough healthy subjects in this age bracket?)
Nonetheless, it is a non-specific indication of inflammation.
I would not attribute much diagnostic value to this finding.
Best wishes,
Niko
