choking

I was drinking water and i guess it went down the wrong pipe. I was gasping for air for about 30 sec. And then was able to breathe. My daughter was in the other room and i thought I was going to start breathing faster than I thought so I didn't wake her. Should I have woke her up to call 911 instead of waiting so long? Also, the next day my thought feels like its strained or something is there. Should I go to the doctor?

Hi,

How are you?
Sometimes drinking water too quickly causes the water to enter the wind pipe instead of the food pipe and this causes choking. Please be rest assured the water did not go to the lungs so it is fine.
Please remember to drink water slowly and it is common to get a strained feeling in the chest afterwards.

Hello,

There are many causes for these types of symptoms.Firstly,it can be due to panic attack and might be stress induced. Panic attacks are sudden, discrete periods of intense anxiety, mounting physiological arousal, fear, stomach problems and discomfort that are associated with a variety of somatic and cognitive symptoms.
Treatment includes anti anxiety medicines(available on prescription by a physician).

Secondly,it can be GERD(gastroesophageal reflux disease).Try raising the head end of the bed by 2-3 blocks and take soft, bland diet for a few days. Also take your dinner 2 hrs prior to bedtime. You can also take antacids like Mylanta and prilosec and observe for any change in symptoms.

Other conditions that can cause feeling of choking are laryngo-tracheitis,epiglottitis,tracheo-esophageal fistula, obstructive sleep apnea and Huntigston’s disease.Pls get yourself evaluated by a physician or ENT specialist for these.
