Low Ferritin Levels

Hi, I have been feeling unwell for a couple of months with increased muscle spasms/twitches, joint pain, weakness, fatigue, lack of concentration, unable to think straight, irritability, depression, more hair loss than usual and extra dry hair and a lack of anything really!  I have been to see two drs - one said my symptoms were reflective of stress and the other (after the symptoms got worse) carried out a blood test.  Within a few days I received a phone call from the surgery to say that I was slightly anemic and needed to take 3 x Ferrous Fumerate a day for a while.

I am not sure that my symptoms can be easily explained with just 'slight anemia' .  As an worried patient, I returned to the dr that carried out the blood tests and she kindly explained that my Ferritin level was 4 which was low and my blood count was just over 11 thus classed as anemic.  She did say that there was an auto immune flag that had come up on the test and this is under further investigation.

I am interested what other people are going through.  Definately worried as the cramps/twitches are not typical of 'slight' anemia :(

Hello! Did you ever get this figured out, and what was the cause? I hope you're doing well. Thank you!

Not related to menstruation but my son had extreme fatigue and performance issues in his sport of choice out of nowhere (it seemed). We had regular blood work but when we consulted with a nutritionist, they had his ferritin level checked as that can lead to that same kind of fatigue. Have you gotten a lab order to check this from your doctor yet?

Well, a heavy period is not going to help the anemia.

My period is abnormally heavy this month for me.  Wondering if there is some connection with how I'm feeling?

Not sure which autoimmune issue arose.  The GP said that some people come up as abnormal which is normal for them?  She indicated that I shouldn't worry about it.

Explain the "autoimmune flag."   What autoimmune marker?

I will agree it sounds more than just "anemia."  Sounds autoimmune; there are so many different autoimmune disorders I would not begin to guess what yours is.

At least this physician is being thorough and not like the other one that wrote it off to stress.

Make sure you take the iron with a FULL glass of water and/or food; can cause gastric upset.
