hot and cold

I have suffered with hot flashes for 20 years.  They are not as extreme as they once were..but I still have them.  I wake up in the night (middle of winter, and I only sleep with one blanket on) and have to throw the covers off...AND.. I search the other side of the bed out just for the cold sheets...to cool down.  In the last couple of years..... I get cold and search out the spare blanket that I have started keeping on the bed.
So I wake up sweating, throw off the covers.......cool down...cover back up......and then wake up because I'm cold and need the extra blanket.  I woke up four times last night.

Hi! Underlying infection or inflammation (as in arthritis, IBS etc) in the body can result in the feeling of heat. Another possibility is hyperthyroidism. Antibiotic or other drug metabolism can also cause a feeling of heat in the body. Drink plenty of fluids, eat lots of fruits and vegetables and take multivitamins. Get your thyroid function assessed. Sjogren’s syndrome is another possibility. It can also be due to heart problems, especially if you feel suffocated at night. Menopause is also a known cause so get FSH, LH, estrogen and progesterone level assessed.
The best thing would be to consult a general practitioner or PCP and try and assess what is the cause of your problem. Then proper referral for concerned specialist can take things further and get you proper treatment. Take care!

Another possible cause is diabetes.  I was having the hot flashes too, even years after a total hysterectomy and then was diagnosed with diabetes.  With medication and control of my blood sugar, the hot flashes have all but disappeared.  Good luck to you.

I definitly agree with mooksmom, you should really see your doctor about this.  My mom does the same thing.  She had to have a totally historictimy(sp) at 24-26 because she had cancer, and that through her in to early menopause and so she dealt with the hot flashes for years (she is 51 now) and she finally went to the doctor and it was her body being so out of wack so the doctor put her on some hormones to help balance her out.  You might also go to your local herbs store to see if they have anything that might help you out natural but always consult with your doctor.  Good Luck I hope that everything starts working for you and you get well soon.

I'd think hormone levels OR thyroid issues. Both need your doctor's look-see.
