liposarcoma

I was diagnosed with liposarcoma.  How long can I be expected to live?

I had Stage 3 Pleomorphic Liposarcoma in my right leg back in June 1999. Treated with surgery (Vanderbilt Hospital, Nashville TN) & radiation. All is well with my "normal functioning" but goofy looking leg.

I give you this information with the hope of giving you some encouragement, and I encourage you to get the necessary treatments going as soon as possible!

Hi, Emmy,
You are so fortunate to have a benign liposarcoma tumor.  Thanks so much for writing back!  :)  I had a lot of pain one day about nine years ago in my left side and knew something was terribly wrong.  I had a catscan done and sure enough I was diagnosed with retroperitoneal well-differentiated liposarcoma.  I had this huge operation and had my left kidney removed.  Then I underwent radiation which caused a ton of nerve damage (chronic pain).  The Dr.s gave me a 98% chance the cancer wouldn't return.  Well, about four years later, I had this huge benign lipoma that had to be removed and sure enough there were some liposarcoma cells found.......ugh!  So I have a 6 inch liposarcoma in my stomach that has slowly grown over the last five years.  I will need another surgery soon to remove it again.  Where do you live?  I live near Seattle, WA.  Talk to you again hopefully. :)

Prognosis depends on where the tumor is in relation to lymph nodes, if the cancer is in the lymph nodes, what kind of cancer cells you're dealing with, and how large to tumor is.

In stage one, liposarcoma is usually treated with surgery to removed the whole tumor and some of the surrounding tissues. In later stages, chemo or radiation may be needed to get rid of the cancer altogether.

The good news is that liposarcoma is a histiocyte cancer, which have only a 10% chance of relapse! I've been through my own histiocyte scare, though mine was benign, and I know how terffying it is to face this diagnosis.

I would like to know, if this isn't too personal, how long have you known, and how did you get diagnosed? (Blood, biopsy, etc). If you haven't had a biopsy, get one, along with CT and MRI. Talk to your doctor right away so you can get well ASAP>

Feel free to message me if you need anything. I hope this helped out a little, and please feel better!

~ Em
