sternum

Hi. Since I was 14 in 2010 I have started to get a popping sensation when I breath. The popping sensation is at the bottom of my sternum (breastbone). It mostly happens while I am lying down. It dosen't hurt but it really irratates me because I find it hard to sleep at night. I have to get my four fingers on one hand and put a little pressure on the sternum (breastbone) where the popping sensation is. This stops the popping sensation but I can't keep my hand there twenty-four hors a day. It really annoys me. Has anyone got any idea what this could be. I went to the doctor and she used her stephascope to see what was wronge. She said she has never heard of my symptom before, sais it's not life threatning and she said there isn't anything she can do. Its been going on for over a year and i am having sleeping problems because of it. Please I need help.Thanks.

I don't drink caffeine, tea or alcohol (i am only 15 years old). I don't smoke or eat fried food. i am a healthy person (kind of). I have so many medical conditions. By any chance could one of them be causing it. I have been diagnosed three years ago with the rarest form of autism which is Aspergers Syndrome. With Aspergers Syndrome 99% have chronic constipation in the bowls, and 33% have depression I have both of them. I am a special needs teenager and i am also disabled. I couldn't walk until i was three and a half. I have lax muscles, weak ligaments and flat feet. I stand, sit and walk with an arched back. I dont have an arched spine and my spine is in line with my hips, it is just the way I stand. I have just been diagnosed about a month ago with Anemia. My white blood count was 10.3 it is now 9.5. I have also been diagnosed on Thursday with vitamin d defficency. My vitamin d count is 14 and I am on 5 vitamin d tablets a day. On tuesday the 3rd of May I am going to see a pediatrition about my Anemia. I can't have iron tablets because of my constipation. The doctor wants to treat the cause.Twice every month since around December time I have been getting water infections every month. I had a scan and I will also be seening the pediatrition about that. Also this year I have been diagnosed with astigmatism. I have a bad skin condition and have to wash in a special cream called dermol 200. Since december I have been getting ear infections in my right ear and my ear has bled twice. I really need to see someone about the popping sensation but the doctor just won't listen. Thank you for the things you have written. I am sorry I wrote so much I just don't know what to do anymore. I have been going to hospital appointmants since January and i am booked up with hospital appointmants right up until August. Should i write down what you wrote to me and take it to the doctor next time i see her. Then maybe she can do something about my popping sensation. She has no idea what it could be. Thanks.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
The symptoms could be exacerbation of the GERD.  It could also be hiatal hernia. Treatment is a combination of drugs to reduce the acid and lifestyle changes. You will need to take a combination of medications (under medical supervision) like a proton pump inhibitor such as omeprazole, lansoprazole or pantoprazole empty stomach in the morning and an antacid gel after meals for complete relief. Possibility of H pylori infection too should be looked into by a carbon urea breath test and a combination antibiotic tried. Many a times a persisting H pylori infection can be the cause behind acidity not responding to treatment.
Life style changes that will help include: Avoid heavy meals and eat frequent small meals. Avoid too much of caffeine, tea, smoking, fried food and drinks both alcoholic and non alcoholic fuzzy ones. Avoid heavy exercises within 4 hours of a heavy meal. Raise the head end of the bed by pillows to 30 degrees. Avoid lying down for least 2 hours after food. Maybe these tips will help you.
Do discuss this with your doctor. Take care!
