Hello,
E.coli is the commonest organism that can cause infection of the urinary tract. E.coli is mostly present in the digestive tract and since you had diarrhea, they cling to the opening of the urethra and begin to multiply. Then from the opening of urethra, they ascend upwards to the bladder. If the infection is not treated promptly, bacteria may then travel further up the ureters to multiply and infect the kidneys.

So that is why your doctor has advised you to consult a urologist if the infection does not heal.
I hope it helps. Take care and regards.
