Holding Urine

I am 23 and I have shy bladder syndrome and it has not been a problem until I started to go to college and the washrooms are public. For the last year my intake of water has went down from 2L a day to maybe 2cups of water a day because I dont want to have to need the washroom... I go from 7am-5pm without voiding 5 days a week. No matter how bad I have to go I just cant and I am concerned about the damage I may be doing to my bladder. I know I have to go but I always hold it.

I am so glad to hear you are trying to drink some water as well as trying to take bathroom breaks!! Even if you can't go at first, just the act of going into the bathroom and trying to relax while in there should help the "flow" come easier. One step at a time, way to go!

It is extremely important to take in enough fluids as well as urintate them out Carrie, this is one the ways you eliminate toxins from your body.  Cutting back on intake of fluids, especially water, is not a good idea. Proper hydration is necessary  for all of the systems of the body to operate functionally, not just the bladder.

Sometimes we need to trick our brains to make ourselves "go in public"; for example sometimes visualizing a waterfall or other running water may help you relax enough to  be able to get the urine to come out. You may also speak with a nurse at the university you attend, I'm sure she can give you some suggestions as well as point out to you where there may be private stall bathrooms at on campus so you can find a place to go in private. Remember, everyone needs to urinate, this is a  normal body function, and you should not be embarrassed by it.

Please do not hold back urination, you might start getting  bladder infections. This forum is for pelvic organ prolapse so I'm going to contact administration and have them transfer you over to urology-I'm sure you will get some good suggestions from others on that site.

Good luck and keep pumping the water!
