Testiculer Pain

I am a 15 year old male and for the past week and a half have been experiencing pain in my left testicle's Spermatic Cord. My father and brother are both doctors, and on the day where I first began to feel pain I confronted my brother and asked if this was a problem. I told him about swelling, and he felt it was not necessary to examine it since the swelling is not visible. He suggested it was most likely puberty related and told me not to be concerned. My brother has returned to Vancover to continue studying to become an ophthalmologist. I have not talked to anyone about it since though the pain seems to have subsided (mostly) but the swelling is still there.
Given that my situation has not improved much or gotten worse since the beginning do you suggest I see a doctor (or my father) about this problem? Or do you have any idea what it might be?

Thank you for responding. The pain and swelling are both very minor. And this was not cause by and pinching of the gland, is it possible that a reflux could occur without pinching?

If both pain and swelling are minor could torsion of testis still be a possible condition? And should medical attention be required? Or wait for more aggressive or sever symptoms.

Awaiting your reply,

Thanks Mike

Hi,

Cause for concern would depend on the extent or size of swelling, location on the epididymis, and associated factors.

Could there have been reflux of semen in the epididymis? This could have occurred if you tried to suppress ejaculation by pinching the glans closed.

If there was reflux, it could definitely have irritated the epididymis and resulted in localized inflammation and swelling. This could also predispose to infection.

Another possibility is that you could have developed a cyst of the spermatic cord. This does not usually present with pain.

Do discuss your symptoms with your father or another doctor so it can be evaluated whether you need antibiotic treatment.

The next time you have any testicular pain or swelling, do seek medical attention at the earliest, especially if the pain is severe. This is in view of the possibility of torsion of testis which is an emergency condition and requires surgical intervention within 6-8 hours after onset of symptoms.

Do keep us posted on your doubts and progress.
Regards
