epidydymitis for about 3 months

On August 15, 2007, I went to my primary doctor with scrotal pain (left side). He diagnosed me with epidydymitis and prescribed Cipro (500 mg) for 5 days. I went to a Urologist about a week later with the same symptoms. The Urologist ordered an Ultrasound which came back normal with an increased blood flow to the left side of my scrotum. The Urologist prescribed Doxycycline for 10 days (100 mg). I started to finally feel better, but about 5 days after I finished with the Doxycycline, my symptoms started to return. I went back to the Urologist again, he then prescribed 4 weeks of doxycycline (100 mg). I finished the 4 weeks of Doxycycline and I had I felt like I had healed. Well, about 3 days after I finished with the 4 weeks of Doxyxycline, my symptoms returned again. I went back to the Urologist and the urologist prescribed 4 weeks of doxycycline and 4 weeks of cipro. I am on the 3rd day of taking the cipro and the doxycycline together and I now have some weird symptoms. Last night, I noticed that my left side of my scrotum had started to feel heavy and very hot. My pain has pretty much gone away but I am now concerned that I might have testicular cancer. I am unable to find and lumps or bumps. What could be causing the hot sensation coming from my left testical? I am going to a different Urologist tomorrow. I am 22 years old and I am male. Thanks!

I agree with the courses of antibiotics as well as the imaging studies.

Obtaining a urine culture as well as samples of the prostatic fluid should be considered.  If the bacteria is resistant to the doxycycline, other antibiotics should be tried.

Testicular cancer is less likely in light of a normal scrotal ultrasound.

Further imaging of scrotum can be considered with an MRI if the symptoms continue.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician or urologist.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
