persistent epididymo-orchitis

Hi all,

I have been diagnosed with epididymo-orchitis but I cant seem to get rid of it. Here are the tablets ive had/are on...

Doxy x2 a day for 14 days
Metronidazole  x2 a day (I think) for 5 days
After 5 days I was on Levofloxacin 1 tablet a day for 10 days
and Azithromycin - 500mg day one and 250mg for 4 days after
Then today ive finished levofloxacin and azithromycin im to start Co-amoxiclav.

All of these have been prescribed by a Dr but im still in so much pain! Common STIs have been ruled out and my mycoplasma test was negative (before I started the abx). I asked the Dr about ureaplasma and he said dont worry about it as if I did have it, the meds would have got rid of it.

I just feel lost now. Is there anything else I can do at home to help this?

I’ve had Epididymitis, it can be pretty unpleasant & all I can tell you is, it can take awhile for the antibiotics to work. Mine hung around for 3-4 wks, gradually got better. It was many yrs ago & if my memory serves, it was still bothering me just a bit even a few weeks after that as well, but only very minor issues by that time - I still felt some tenderness in the scrotum, but it was tolerable. So be patient - it can take awhile...

If you don’t start to feel better, you might want to seek out a good Urologist. Good luck & let us know how it goes...

For infectious cases, it takes two to three days to start feeling better. If you don't, and if the redness doesn't begin to fade, call your provider. Discomfort can last for weeks to months after the full course of antibiotics is taken in some cases. It can take months for the swelling to ease. Rest with the scrotum raised for a day or two helps speed healing."

It doesn't mean you aren't better. Sometimes, it just takes awhile for the pain to go away. :(

Yep - that was exactly my experience! I had lingering pain & discomfort for several weeks, but it gradually got better. Some days were better than others & at times I was concerned it wasn’t improving, but it did, just took some time.

Thanks all. All my STI tests (inc mycoplasma) came back neg and they said they dont do any more test. They told me to give it a week then see my GP!

You do not have an STD. We have covered that.

If you have epididymo-orchitis, you need to be under the care of a urologist. Are they the ones who referred you back to the GP? If they have, then just give it some time. You could have lingering pain for weeks.

I am experiencing same issue. I have achy pain on my right testicle more pin pointed. It tends to ache more in certain position. I have had Doxyclyclin for 2 weeks but it hasn’t gone away. I wanted to know from anyone who has experienced from epididymitis orchitis....what sort of pain you have? Also how long should it take for it to go away. I would really appreciate any reply

If you are on antibiotics and after 2 weeks of them, nothing has changed, you need to check back with your doctor.  I don't know if this is what you are asking but     Epididymitis is swelling or pain in the back of the testicle in the coiled tube (epididymis) that stores and carries sperm.      Orchitis is swelling or pain in one or both testicles, usually from an infection or virus.

Meth. Stop smoking it. It’s a known cause for this type of pain.
