varicose/spider veins

I'm 26 years old, I live an active life, have a muscular body, work out regularly 3 - 4 times a week, and eat healthy. But, for some reason I have these tiny veins (always red) that pop up now and again on my legs, and they are painful. Sometimes they radiate from a darker center, like a bruise. Sometimes they're just randomly at the surface of my skin. Is there any reason why I could be having these veins at my age? I started noticing them last year in the fall.

Typically these represent failure of small "perforating" veins. These connect the veins under the skin to the deep veins. There is a tiny an farly flimsy valve in each one that is supposed to only allow flow from superficial to deep. When one of these fails pressure from the deep system forces blood backwards into the superficial tributaries and they dilate. It is common the the perforating vein shares a hole through the fascia (sheet of connective tissue) with sensory nerves. As pressure is applied to the now incompetent perforating vein the nerve is squeezed and signals pain. There are thought to be several hundred perforating veins on each leg.  Approximately 35% of women have defective systems of reticular veins in the outer thighs. This appears to be congenital as you either have it or you don't by the time you are about 20 years old. Sclerotherapy where eiter a foam or liquid is injected nto the abnormal vein and scarsthe down isthe current treatment of choice for this.
