I'm glad to have finally found a forum to discussion my vocal cord problem. I had surgery on March 9, 2010 to remove my thyroid, and my life has not been the same since. I have been diagnose with Bilateral Vocal Cord Paralysis, it's difficult to talk, breath, and swallow. My ENT now wants me to consider having additional surgery, either a tracheotomy or arytenoidectomy, neither is a good choice for me. I'm planning to get a second and third opinion. From what I've been researching there is not many alternatives to this condition other than the two I listed. Does anyone know of any other procedures that are less evasive?

I know exactly what you are talking about!!! My vocal cord has been paralyzed for well over a year. I am miserable. the collagen injections did very little to help, and it was temporary. There is a surgery where the ENT puts in an implant in the paralyzed cord, which is made of silicone or some safe material, and it causes the cords to meet together better. Therefore, you're supposed to have a better voice as well as less chance of strangling on liquids. I am wanting to have this surgery ASAP, but have a teenager who has had problems lately and that has taken all my energy and time. Will get back to you if I have it soon. I am very, very self-conscious of my voice!!! I used to have such a nice voice and I sang too. Good luck to you.
