Getting off of Effexor

I've been on Effexor for about 7 years now. I want off but the doctors will not take me off. Going cold is not an option. I missed 2 to 3 days before and thought I was dying from the withdrawals I had. I was on 150mg but after that whole withdrawal experience and the doctor refusing to take me off, I decided to take only half the prescribed amount. Over the course of 7 years I've gain about 45 pounds. I've never been a person who ate much and that hasn't changed. Which confuses me with the weight gain and the doctor assuring me its not caused by Effexor. Counting calories and/or exercise had not helped to reduce my weight. My depression has gotten a lot better and now I want off! Any suggestions are welcomed....
