Sunday Weigh In July 26, 2020

Good morning... how is everyone doing this morning?  It looks like it's going to be another of our usual summer days, here - hot, hotter and hottest...  It's already 81° and there's not a breath of breeze outside so it's stacking up to be pretty stifling.

There isn't much going on in my world... I'm still waiting for pathology from my colonoscopy on the 16th... I'm not sure how long it will take to get that back.

I did see my neurologist and he ordered some blood work to see if we can determine a cause of the severe muscle cramps I've been having.  I'll get that done next week.  He also prescribed a new medication for the cramps, but I doubt I'll be on it for very long as 2 of its side effects are weight gain and tiredness - the 2 things that I have the most trouble with.  Although the cramps are definitely less than they've been, the tiredness is almost overwhelming.  The weight issue is "to be determined" but not looking good...  It's been pointed out to me that the medication I take for cholesterol also causes muscle pain and cramps, so I'm going to bring that up to my doctor(s) and see if there's something I can replace that with...

I'll also be having new thyroid blood work to see what/if anything the new (minuscule) increase has done... it sure hasn't done anything to help the way I feel, but I know if my TSH level is "in range", my endo is going to say it's fine, regardless of how I feel.  I'm trying to come up with my own plan of action in case this happens...

I've been trying to cut back on the amount of food I'm eating and I have started going for an evening walk again, though it's difficult with the heat.  I haven't been walking since my neighbor left in April and I can tell how out of shape I've become... it doesn't take much to get out of breath and the muscles in my legs are definitely feeling it.

So - diet and exercise-wise, I think I'm going "better", even if not totally satisfactory.  I haven't weighed today, but yesterday when I weighed, I was up 3.9 lbs from last week, but earlier in the week, I'd been down a pound, so it's really hard to say what's going on.  The trend is, obviously, up...

My short term goal is to simply stop the gain; of course, the long term goal is to start losing again.  Looking back over my weight tracker, I've gained right at 20 lbs in the past year... although most of it is due to hypothyroidism, it's totally unacceptable.

So - what about you?  I hope you've reached whatever goals you set for yourself for this week.

~~Wishing everyone a wonderful, successful week~~

It's hot this week here, too -- over 100 degrees tomorrow, with no rain to help the plants. My husband and I went out to buy something for the yard that would bloom in the middle of summer, and we both felt like we were going to perish in the sun at the gardening center while looking at plants. We're just not used to such high temps!

I think I'll weigh in tomorrow morning. We had a big feast of ham hocks and black-eyed peas last night, and I don't know what they put on the meat in the smoker, but those were the saltiest ham hocks I've ever eaten. My guess is that I could have put on as much as a pound in water retention from all that salt.

The new health challenge looks good, Barb. I've dropped so little weight even when watching my eating, that I know I need to hit it on all fronts. (Just wish I could find a way to exercise that isn't so dull. Thus the gardening; I hope I can get into it.)

Will post weight change tomorrow. Take care!

I like to do exercise in summer, because I've achieved my goal of loosing weight with the help of both diet and workout. I hope you are following a good diet and workout plan for loosing weight.
I'll find some way to get exercise, though it might not be a workout like in a gym.

It looks like a good share of the country is having "Florida" weather lately.  This is the time of year we, typically, deal with the high heat and we aren't being disappointed this year, either...  :-)   Our temps are ranging close to 100° as well so I can sympathize with you.

Annie, your ham hocks and peas sounds good, but wow - that much salt.  I don't blame you for waiting to weigh after that.

I'm happy to hear that you'll be with me for the health challenge.  I realized that I, certainly, have to hit any weight loss efforts on all fronts because decreasing the amount of food I'm eating simply isn't getting the job done.  I'm thinking of dropping a medication whose side effects include weight gain, along with changing my thyroid medication, since I know I'm not eating enough to gain as much weight as I am.   I think I could starve and still gain weight right now.

Weighed this morning, and was up 1 pound from my recent lowest. I guess since it's been two days, I can't blame the salty ham hocks! Time to get real about exercise. The good news is that there is a loop in our immediate neighborhood that works like a track -- my son says he has measured it and it's 1/4th of a mile exactly. So the past couple of night, he and I have been walking it four or five times. It's not very impressive to walk a mile, but it's better than not walking a mile. lol
Maybe you can still blame the ham hocks... it sometimes takes me a couple of days to get rid of fluid retained when I eat something really salty like that...

Yay for the recent walking.  There's nothing wrong with walking a mile.  Maybe you can vary the speed or incorporate some other movement with the walking to make it more intense.

I've been trying to get in a walk in the evening, myself... I don't really have a safe place to walk by myself, except our immediate street.  I suppose by the time I get all done I've done a little less than a mile... as you say: not very impressive, but it's better than not walking.   It's so hot that it can actually be dangerous, so I only make one trip.  When it starts cooling off,  I'll be able to make the trip a couple of times to increase the distance, as well as increase/vary the speed.
