Adding cinnamon to oatmeal gives it a "spiced up" taste and cinnamon can often replace other sweeteners, as can fruit.

Cinnamon is also great for helping to stabilize blood sugar, thereby preventing insulin spikes.

I have found, though, that most restaurants don't have plain cinnamon (so they say); they always offer cinnamon/sugar, which I decline.  We don't often go out for breakfast anymore, but when we did, on a weekly basis, I carried a small container of cinnamon in my bag.

For quick breakfast, Starbucks oatmeal is steel cut and pretty good too.  Much better for you than McDonalds.

I also try to convince someone at the table to order pancakes so I can take a bite ;-)

I always order eggs over easy cooked without oil, tomato slices, turkey sausage link and 1 piece of whole grain toast without butter.  Sound boring but it's always satisfying!

Oatmeal is a really great idea.  My doctor was highly recommending it as the best choice for breakfast, in her opinion.  However, like Barb135 mentioned, McDonalds is not a good place to get this oatmeal.  My doctor said to not buy instant oatmeal or McDonalds.
If you do find a place where you believe their oatmeal will be good, try adding fruit and cinnamon to flavor it up.  Skim milk is also a great addition, and there are a lot of studies saying that milk is a great way to loose weight (in moderation), rather than cutting out dairy altogether.

Oatmeal is a good option at most restaurants, but you have to be careful at some.  I had an oatmeal at McDonald's one day, thinking it would be a good choice and I could literally taste the salt in it. Most restaurants that serve oatmeal use the instant type.

The biggest problem I find with eating out, in general, is the amount of salt/sodium that restaurants use.

It depends on where you're dining.  If it's fast food, options are pretty slim, but you'd want to opt for fruit and yogurt type things.  Breakfast buffet is good, because they typically, provide yogurt, fruits, boiled eggs, and other healthy options.  You have to be careful with regular sit down restaurants, because most of the "good" choices are made bad, by cooking in too much fat, using to much sodium, etc.  Again, opt for yogurt and fruit, oatmeal, veggie omelet cooked without added fat or salt, etc.  If you're having toast, make it whole grain.
