Sorry I didn't respond the first time... I'm not always online to respond immediately when you post.

I think you're confusing BMR with BMI...  BMR is Basic Metabolic Rate - that's the number of calories you'd burn in day if you did nothing but rest.  That's what you need just to keep your involuntary body activities, such as heart rate, brain, kidney, lung/breathing, liver, digestion and other functions going. That does all take energy.  BMR is based on your current height, weight and age. To calculate what you can actually eat each day, you also have to factor in your activity level.  The more active you are, the more calories you can eat.

BMI is Body Mass Index, which is a measure of body fat, based on your height and weight.  BMI can be very misleading, because not all calculations take into account the amount of fluid or muscle in your body.  Your 27.2, I'm relatively sure, is BMI, not BMR.

What do you mean, you can eat 1600 calories before you write anything down in the app?.  You have to track bite or sip that goes into your mouth, not just certain parts of it.  You won't lose weight if you're eating 1600 free calories/day.  That's more than most of us are allowed to eat all day.  I'm only allowed 1200 calories for the whole day.

I'll be happy to help you calculate it accurately, if you like.  I'm going to be out and offline this morning, but I'll be back this afternoon.

You have to burn more calories than you take in, in order to lose weight.

Do you know what your BMR is?  You will use some calories through your BMR - it's been said, approximately 50% of the calories you use/day will be BMR, the rest will be exercise.  If you're hitting that 2900 calorie mark, you're probably eating too many.
