Constant period, prescribed Provera, but unsure when to start birth control pills

I was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome a few years back.  Unlike a lot of pos sufferers my periods are long, sometimes lasting months at a time.  Because of this I went to my ob-gyn 11 days ago, she put me on Provera(10mg, 1 pill for 10 days) to stop my bleeding, and then to start a normal period so that I could begin on birth control to regulate my cycle.  The problem is that I never really stopped bleeding the past week and a half, so I'm unsure of when I should start on my birth control pills.  Do I just start this Sunday? I think I'm having an actual period, instead of the usual bleeding, as I have PMS symptoms.  My birth control pill is Loestrin24Fe, if that makes a difference.

Thank you so much!  I am going to go ahead and start the birth control on Sunday as this feels like an actual period and not just my usual bleeding.  I went thru a similar process 2 yrs ago, but the medicine that I went on before starting the pills caused me to bleed heavily for a few days, then stopped my period until I was done with the medicine, then shortly after I had a normal period and began on the pills.  So Provera was a little different for me, and everyone seems to have such a wide range of symptoms and reactions!  I will be haunting the PCOS forum so I hope to see you there!!

You should hop on over to the PCOS forum for some more info. I'm the CL over there and know much about PCOS.

I'm like you, my periods never stopped. Mine lasted about 2 weeks with 1 lasting all month. They were heavy and horrible cramps. Doctor also put me on Provera to stop them, but acutally made my bleeding worse. I was then put on something I can't remember clear of the name, but went something like Noriedrone (sp). It was like a birth control pill. I was on it 2 months, and in that time I had no period because my doctor was trying to "restore" my lining. After that I started on Yasmin bc and never had a problem. Are you taking metformin as well? I take that 500mg 2x. Lost about 60lbs with that.

For you I think you may want to start your new pill pack on Sunday to be on the safe side. I started mine on a Monday. If your pretty much using it for to control your periods, I suggest to use the Sunday start which is only a few days from now. Hopefully in that time your bleeding will get slow down a bit.

Hopefully this helped you and hope you do join the PCOS forum too!!
