Copper IUD with pregnancy symptoms?

Okay, so I decided instead of posting on old threads, to come here and start a new one.  Let me start off by telling a little about me first.  I am a26 years old, have two children aged 2 and 5 years old and had a Nova-T copper IUD inserted 1 1/2 years ago in Canada.  I currently reside in the USA now.  IN the past I have had missed periods, but that all changed after I got my IUD, which made my period become very heavy and within each month wihtout me missing a cycle.  Also, in 2003, before I had children and had no IUD, I had an ectopic pregnancy and a D & C, but my tube was not removed.  That is all I can I remember on that issues.  Well everything was fine and I had no complaints except for  heavy painful periods after the IUD was in place.  I had a LEEp prcedure done last August(removal of bad cervical cells), but the gyno told me the strings of the IUD were still there and I would be able to keep my current IUD in.  Since December was my last period, I have been patiently awaiting my period.  IN the beginning of this month, I had started what I thought would be my late period, but instead had light spotting(1 pad a day) that was light red to dark brona at times, but no heavy period and not worth to even have to wear a pad.  It lasted for four days, and I was sure this was not the expected period I wanted to show up.  On the 18th of this month I went in for my 6 month chekc up and pap after the LEEP.   I told my doctor my conerns, so they just did a urine test and she said it is very odd chances of getting pregnant, almost none. She said to have missed or no periods are normal, but then I told her my IUD was not a Mirena with hormones as I knew she thought mine was. She said the strings I had on this IUD, look like a mirena IUD, so that is why she probably said that..knowing the hormones in the Mirena may cause no periods. I told her( I am in states now by the way), that in Canada the copper IUD is not the same as the one here. She just said the urine test was negative and not to worry. I asked her if I could come in a month. She looked at me annoyed and said if I feel like I want to, but the strings are still there and there is no chances of pregnancy. I am paronoid and am so confused and sleepless at nights. I am worried and not sure if I should take her word, or start going out and buying my own pg tests and do every few weeks to make sure till a period returns. It is just too strange. I was thinking, maybe it was just too early and I will for sure rebook an appointment with her in a month to make sure, and ask her to do another pregnancy test or even better, a blood test. I can tell she does not appreciate me telling her what to do, but I feel she just does not take me seriously enough and see the chances are there even if I have an IUD and really thinks I am over board. Has anyone else had a copper IUD, missed a period like me and showed up negative on the urine test and then later found out they actually were preggo? Do you think it may just be too ealry?  Has anyone had spooting to as a sign they were pregnant with their IUD as well?  I can't wait to either get a period or find out soon if I am.  This is way too stressfull, and I never thought I would have this concern with the IUD.  Any feed back would help.  Thanks and God bless.

I have been reading through some of these posts and i have been having problems myself. I had the copper iud fitted to regulate my periods as i had problems with the pill, depo and rod. The iud has worked really well in regulating my periods but every month before my period i have pregnancy symptons and i dont understand why its really confusing me and i am spending alot of money on tests to find out im not. Is this supposed to happen? Does the copper coil do this all the time? I feel daft asking these questions considering i have had it in for 2years this year. Thanks for reading and hope someone can help lol

I completely get where you're coming from. This has now happened to me three times and each time everything tells me i'm pregnant. I miss my period but the test at four weeks is always negative. The doctors think I'm crazy. Then I bleed before I reach five weeks and all the symptoms go away but I am left with  a feeling of loss, and a bunch of friends who think I'm a paranoid idiot. But I have a son, I know what pregnancy feels like! The copper IUD makes you feel like a grave yard for fertilised eggs and it is soul destroying. Also without proof doctors treat you as though you have a mental illness. Get rid of it!

I have exact same experience pretty much every month and am on copper coil. Also fed up of feeling pregnant and all the hormonal and emotional stress that comes with it!! I think after reading other people suffer the same too I am convinced it is like getting pregnant and miscarrying every month and I will have the coil removed and try another form of contraception! wish my partner would just get the bloomin snip!! Save me all this stress lol

I've had my Paragard copper IUD for 3 years now. My periods have always been very accurate starting around the 10th of every month. This past year I've been through a divorce and a very difficult custody battle with my x-husband so my periods have been a tad bit sporadic due to stress but they were always heavy and they still always last about 5-6 days. Last month I was 10 days early and this month I was a day late but I did end up starting as heavy as normal with cramping. The only thing different about this time is my period only lasted a few days. I started late Saturday night with spotting, was very heavy Sunday and Monday and spotted all day Tuesday. Now I have brown discharge. All last month I had every pregnancy symptom there is except tender breast so I kept checking my string. They remained visible and still are today but I just felt pregnant. Hormones, nausea, food cravings and aversions, and major frequent urination...like every 1 hour! Prior to my 3rd year I've been nothing but happy with my IUD and never had a problem feeling pregnant or having an abnormal period. What I personally think happens with the IUD (the paragard in my case) is that you do simulate getting pregnant but every month when your period comes, heavier and more painful than usual it's like having a miscarriage every time.
The emotional rollercoaster I go through every month of having symptoms of being pregnant and continually having to feel the string and wonder if I should take a test is getting a bit tiresome.
My question is this: Who else is going through these same problems with the copper IUD? Who has gotten pregnant with the IUD and what were the VERY FIRST symptoms? Did you have mild bleeding? Cramping? A normal period? Could you feel your string after a confirmed PT?
The websites keep saying 1 in every 100 can get pregnant but it sure seems a lot higher to me based on all the stories I keep reading.

I have the copper IUD and have had it for about four years now - since I have been with my fiancée' I have been having these same symptoms.  I have even had discharge come from my breasts. I will have a "period" for a day or two and have it be light - like one pad per day, then suddenly nothing until the next month. I have gone to the doctor when I missed my period completely and she responded that many women under stress have missed periods all together for up to three months.  I really feel that I am miscarrying because I had one when I was 17 - and the intense pains I get in my stomach feels exactly like the ones I had when that happened. They are so intense that it brings me to tears, and then after the pain subsides I start bleeding with heavily, and have large blood clots. This has been going on for 5 months straight now - and my period keeps stopping abruptly! The doctors just keep telling me that everything is fine - but I have a feeling that it is not! Before I had the IUD I was regular to the day - and now the periods come then abruptly stop - it's just not normal!

I have the copper IUD and always get pregnancy symptoms.  I'm not sure if it's just because there is a foreign object in your uterus that perhaps sends strange signals to your brain but I always feel pregnant right before my period.  I cramp for weeks on end, my breasts get so sore and swollen.  I spot and then it goes away but I always manage to get my period.  I just think it's typical with the IUD.
