Yes: iron deficiency anaemia can get worse if it is not treated.

Do everything your GP tells you to do.  And be mindful that it can take ages for iron stores to replenish themselves.

Hi Ladycheona, i got 9.6 anemia at the end of august, my gyn put me under a high rich iron food diet along with for the first couple of months a taken pill daily, the first next month after I started my treatment my number jumped to 11.2, the next one 12.6, so this month I stop taking the iron pill but kept the high iron rich food daily and my doctor asked me to check at half month the blood again to see if the numbers went down since I was not loger taking the pill..that was last week and I am on 13.1 now.
I did not came up with this along, i took blood test and my doctor is controlling my vitamins and iron on the blood, still my doctor said this is at least a 6 months checking to make sure that everything goes ok and make sure that the iron is back to normal.
How I got to the 9.6 point my doctor said was happening probably like a year ago when I started to loose the iron, much likely related to an HPV infection I am currently going through.
As I understand now Iron is not as "famous" as other items in blood but is one of the most important elements to be taken care, so please do not let this pass, take action on it.
To me the regimen on pill and high iron rich food is really not a burden at all...in fact I just simply love to have a full dish of dark green salad with citirics such as orange or grapefruit or blue berries and strawberries...beans are great too, but to me the salads are probably the best thing ever that I added to my food daily. Has to be dark leaves lettuces or spinach better..
Hope this helps!. Good health to you!

Yes, it will get worse.  Iron deficieny anemia is the worst kind of anemia.  It means that your backup storage of iron has been released because of the lack of iron available in your blood.  Your hematocrit and hemoglobin can appear normal because your storage has released it's supply so those numbers don't mean a lot when your ferritin is low.  It just means your body has gone into emergency mode.  I have it right now and I can't tell you how miserable I was for months until I found a doctor who finally ran a Ferritin test.  This type of anemia occurs with severe malnutrition, malabsorption in the intestines which means you aren't getting other vitamins either or you are bleeding internally or losing too much iron during your cycle if you are a woman.  Women or men past 50 are usually sent for tests for colon cancer.  There is a reason why you are anemic, and you need to know why.  Only in rare cases can they find no reason, but it still has to be treated.
