Possible uterine prolapse?

I am 22 years old, haven't had any kids.  So this is really weird, but this morning when I was inserting a tampon (ob type) I noticed a bulge about 1 1/2 inches inside my vagina that I am pretty sure is my cervix.  I did some further "investigating" and have come to the conclusion that that has to be what it is (I know self-diagnosing isn't the best idea, but I can't help it!)  I know it wasn't down nearly so low before, as I have used ob tampons for a while and so was familiar with my anatomy.  How serious of a problem is this?  Everything I have read in my research has indicated that it usually happens to women who have given birth and/or are older--I'm too young for this stuff!  It is making it difficult to use tampons as they end up leaking if I don't get them in just the right spot, and this is a real inconvenience as I am an active person (running, swimming etc.).  Speaking of activity, will running make the situation worse?  If so, what kinds of activities would be good alternatives?  The other problem is that I don't currently have health insurance with my job but will once I start grad school (nurse practitioner program) in the fall, so that makes it hard to go get checked out.  How should I handle this situation--are there measures I can take to help it get better or at least keep it from getting worse?  I have read a lot about how Kegels are supposed to be good, so I have started doing these.  What else can I do, and how urgent is this problem?  I would like to have children someday so I don't want to screw things up in this area.

I did go to an urgent care clinic yesterday, and applied for the free care program to cover myself until I'm back in school and have insurance through the school.  The doctor who examined me said things were fine and that it was a variation of normal anatomy, although it still seems a little weird to me and I find it hard to believe that I wouldn't have noticed it before (he said maybe this was just the first time I noticed it, which I suppose is possible but not that likely).  I also think female doctors would understand this sort of thing better, having the same parts and all, so once my paperwork goes through I will schedule myself for a physical with a female doctor at that clinic (plus it's far less embarrassing to talk about these things with another woman, not to mention having it examined!)  I have so far managed to use tampons today without a problem, so maybe it's just a matter of having to be a little more careful of how I position them (the difficulty I had yesterday happened when I tried to put it in differently after having noticed this whole situation).  Just thought I'd post an update.  Also, does anyone know if it's possible for things to shift/change shape at all due to hormones during menstruation etc.?  That could be another possibility.

You should be able to go to your local health department at little or no cost.  I'm not sure what state you live in but in SC they have a family plannng waiver card.  I'm sure your state should have something like it.  I too am a student with no income and that is how I qualified.  If you are working I think as long as you don't make over $20,000 a year you qualify.

I would go to the Dr. about it sweety. You said yourself, this normally only happens to women who have given birth or older women. I was in the same boat as you with health ins. for a while. Some things are worth getting checked out. If you go to a PLAN. Paren.clinic in you area(if there is one) they offer a discount on services. Good luck

It could be your uterus has tilted or has become retroverted.
My uterus is titled and have had 5 kids.  My doctor told me
it gets in the right position when you're pregnant.  Good
idea to check with your doctor just to be on the safe side.
