Prolonged bleeding

I have abnormal bleeding in small amount since mid April.  Normal menstruation (more blood flow) took place in early May.  Now taken norethisterone 5 mg three times daily for two weeks but the small amount of bleeding is still there.  There seems a pattern: more blood in the morning, less in afternoon and nearly nil at night.

May I know what could this mean?

Hi there, you're welcome. the fibroid that you have will most definately cause you to bleed so dont worry about that, it will take some time for your body to adjust to the hormone. agnus castus is highly recommended by a lot of women, you should give it a try providing you are not taking anything else that will interfere with it or you are not allergic, they should be fine though as they are just a herb. And the most important thing of all.....DO NOT stress! as i know stress is highly dangerous and will just upset your hormones even more causing you to bleed further more! try meditation or yoga, i highly recommend with relaxation cd's, they are great and can help you to release the 'happy hormone'. Im still waiting on my ultra sound, fingers crossed everything is a' ok though. Hope you get it sorted!

Hi all,
Having taken the progesterone for more than three weeks, the bleeding is now on and off sort of "stopping" i.e. stopped on a day, then some traces in the next morning, then stopped again in the afternoon.  I am now having more and more time with nil bleeding.    For example, nil bleeding on last Friday, last Saturday afternoon and nearly nil bleeding today.  So afterall there is some response to the hormone.

Could this mean the bleeding is simply dysfunctional but somehow takes longer time for me to heal it; or could it be that there are some inherent polyps but the persistent use of the hormone has suppressed it somehow?  I will stop the med this weekend, then will come the withdrawal bleeding and the period that follows.  Will the light bleeding resume after the period?  Who can answer these?

Thanks yorkie for your comments and advice.  The bleeding still continues which does upset me.  I am 39 years old.  I hope it is the fibroid that causes the bleeding and nothing else.   Maybe I should change med, and see another doc to sort out what it is all about.  Hope nothing serious for both of us!

Fibroids are non cancerous growths, and yes that is most likely the cause of your bleeding, if thats the case they should be discussing other meds with you as norethisterone will only stop the bleeding, it will not get rid of the fibroid. if it becomes too much of a problem or if it becomes very large in size(which they should monitor every so often) then they will have to remove the fibroid. if you do have a hormonal problem then try Agnus Castus, a very good herbal remedy apparently that you can get from herbal shops, i dont know how old you are but they do suggest you only take if over the age of 18. Do try and stick to the more natural remedies as all these chemical based ones will only upset your hormones even more. I hope i have been of some help. think i will leave the norethisterone for now and see what my doc says!

What I understand is that if the bleeding is due to hormonal imbalance, the medication should help stop the bleeding and restore the system.  I have taken norethisterone for more than two weeks without much side effects, except a bit depressed at times (which can be caused by the bleeding).  I understand it is not a harmful drug so long as you are not taking it for a long time.

The problem with me is that having taken it for more than two weeks now, the light bleeding is still there.  It does make me worry, as it may imply the problem is not hormonal, but mechanical (i.e. polyrps, tumor, cancer).

Does anyone know if it is common for norethisterone to "fail" in stopping bleeding arising from hormonal problem?  I am a virgin so doc look unwilling to do more in-depth examination (e.g. biopsy) for me.  Ultrasound reveals that I got a uterine fibroid (about 5 cm).  Can the bleeding be caused by the fibroid?  Or is it endometrial cancer?  I am really scared.

hi there,

how bizarre, i have been having the exact same problem and since april too, i have been going out of my mind. my gyn prescribed me norethisterone 5mg to take twice a day as she thinks it might be a lack of progesterone production, have you been told this? im not sure if i should take this though as it apparently stops or delays ovulation and am trying to concieve. have you had any probs with this pill? would you recommend giving it a go? i hope we both finally get to the bottom of what this is any way and hope that it is nothing serious!
