Tailbone

What is the normal procedure that doctors perform to check tailbone pain? I'm a concerned 16 year old, I don't feel comfortable letting a doctor shove anything up there but the pain is getting worse, especially after I play a softball game, so I think it's just muscle pain in that area. Please help!

So will they internally examine it to determine what it is? I'm scared of that! I don't want it to be uncomfortable & awkward being that I'm only 16!

Hello,
Tailbone pain can be due to coccydynia as well. Inflammation of the bony area (tailbone or coccyx) located between the buttocks is referred to as coccydynia. Coccydynia is associated with pain and tenderness at the tip of the tailbone between the buttocks. The pain is often worsened by sitting.

Caused by injury to the coccyx like trauma, fall or normal labour or even spontaneously without any cause.

Diagnosed only on basis of clinical evaluation and treatment includes using a well-padded seat when sitting and avoiding long periods of sitting when possible.Take adequate rest, avoid re-injury to the affected area and take some antiinflammatory and pain medications like ibuprofen(motrin) or diclofenac. Some severe cases with persistent coccydynia are treated with local cortisone injection and surgical resection of the coccyx.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.

Most likely.  Never hurts to get checked out but they do nothing invasive to check out a soft tissue issue.  No worries about that.

Take some ibuprofen as well.  It helps reduce swelling internally as well as helps with pain and muscle soreness.

good luck

I did not fall on it, I believe I pulled something or strained a muscles by playing softball! It started randomly one day when I got out of the car at a tournament a few weeks ago and has lasted since! It's very sore and tender when I sit down and stand up. It is kind of in the area right below the tailbone & on the tailbone so Im guessing its just muscle?

Hi there and welcome.  Oh, they don't examine the tailbone from the inside and nothing is shoved anywhere!  Rest assured.  Typically a broken tailbone is diagnosed through symptom reporting.  I fell and hurt my tailbone in my early 20's.  And there is no treatment for it.  It just has to heal.

If anything, they can do an x ray but honestly, for the tailbone that isn't that common.  You explain what happened and what you are feeling and then they go from there.

I would also talk to your mom about it.  good luck
