Vaginal irritation on and off for years, any ideas?

Hi everyone,

Since 2015 I’ve been experiencing on and off vaginal irritation. When it’s at it’s worst I experience very heavy sticky and irritating discharge, pain, itching and burning when I urinate.

I was always prone to yeast infections so I went to the doctor countless times when it first started experiencing symptoms. I tested negative for a yeast infection despite my symptoms not going away they told me it’s probably normal and that I was just anxious or stressed, but I definitely knew that it wasn’t normal for me, but I couldn’t get them to take me seriously which was very upsetting.

The irratation continued for months until 2016 when it became less severe, then in December 2017 my symptoms worsened again. In April 2018, I visited a STD clinic despite not having any sexual contact. They ran a standard std test on me and I came back negative for everything. They told me to come back if symptoms persisted but I just felt a little discouraged due to my previous experience with the doctors and testing negative.

Recently, I’ve noticed a persistent dull ache in my lower pelvis region, which is slighty tender if I push into my pelvis, my discharge also has a very strong odour, it’s smells almost like ammonia. I also need to urinate frequently and sometimes I just can’t. I’m unsure if I’ve been tested for BV or Trich which makes me wonder could it be that? I’ve also read about PID, but I’m unsure if my symptoms are even severe enough?

I’m just at a complete loss! Frustrated and upset that this nightmare will never end. Has anyone experienced similar? I plan to go back to STD clinic but I’m not able to go as soon as I’d like to, just hoping if anyone could help or has any ideas or advice?

Thank you!

I'm not sure an STD clinic is the right place to go.  You sound like you need a solid ob/gyn as your regular doctor to follow you.  You don't have an STD it sounds so you need regular gynecological care. BV has  hallmark signs of  foul smelling discharge and greyish, thin watery discharge.  Without those symptoms, I would not worry about BV. I also wouldn't worry about trich which is pretty much a silent issue.  What about something like you have a simple (non dangerous and common) cyst in your ovary?  That's something most women experience from time to time. It can cause the dull ache you describe.   Perhaps the smell you have from your discharge is BV.  That's a simple swab to find out if you have it.  I'd go ahead and start taking a probiotic to see if you can get the ph of your vagina in balance.  Also wear cotton underwear, change them often. Air dry by sleeping without underwear from time to time.  I would not be excessively worried about this as these symptoms are actually something many women battle and it is something just to be worked out.  Nothing dangerous involved. good luck
