Why did I have bad cramps with the copper coil?

Went and got a copper coil fitted as emergency contraception last week. Ever since I experienced HORRENDOUS cramping and a lot of bleeding. Except it wasn't like a period it was bright red thin blood, not normal.
Anyway, I went to get it taken out and the cramping immediately stopped.
They measured my uterus and said that it was very small (4-6cm) (I'm a 20 year old) and that my coil may have been to big for me and that I could have another in the future (no thank you).
I was wondering if anyone knows why I might have experienced such an extreme reaction, and what kind of problems I might encounter having a small uterus later on (when I have children etc.)

I had nearly the same reaction with the Mirena IUD and it's unfortunate because I had REALLY high hopes for an IUD working out. However, it's not for everyone and that was my case. You may want to consider the Skyla IUD. That one is small in physical size. If you go for another IUD, I would suggest trying one without the copper to rule out any copper allergy too.
