fluttering in the vaginal area

Hi, i just came to your site for the first time and i read a story about a young lady that is having the same symptoms that i am having and i was so relieved because i thought that i was going crazy. I am looking for answers as to why i am experiencing fluttering in my vaginal area. It started about 8 months ago and has been ongoing every since on a regular basis. The best way for me to describe how it feels is that it feels like a butterfly is inside of my vagina. It even does it when i have my period. It feels like the inside of my vagina is lightly vibrating or something. I cant concentrate on anything, i cant focus and i cant sleep at all!! Its just that irritating and it is driving me crazy! I told my doctor about it and he did a pelvic exam, took cultures, urine sample, did a pap smear and the whole nine yards but everything is coming back normal so he cannot figure out what is wrong with me. It is scary because i dont know what is wrong either but i know what i am feeling. Can someone please help me before i lose my mind. thank you.

Hi I came here because I am having a similar issue but may have found a clue! Maybe we are all looking in the wrong places! Eye twitches are nerve issues and at least for me it really feels like a repetitive eye twitch, but in my vaginal area! My mother had cervical spine issues (neck) and was told that there is a nerve in your neck that can cause vaginal fluttering when it is aggravated/pinched. It didn't cause it for her, but the doc mentioned it as a possible side effect to her having a slipped disc. NOT SAYING we all have slipped discs but maybe the GYNO's can't find anything because it's related to a spinal/nerve issue. Good luck everyone!

You are exactly right. I suffer from Cervical Spine problems. I have degenerated, herniated discs in my neck and certain nerve roots go right to our groin. They go actually go through the whole body ( Spinal Cord) I notice this issue when I'm in certain positions or having a bad day with my neck. It's the only thing that makes sense. Sometimes it can be minor inflammatory changes that can irritate your nerves. Muscle relaxers do help, but will make you sleepy.
Wow...I am so glad I found this site.  I thought I was going crazy.  I started getting this fluttering sensation in my vagina area about a week ago.  I was afraid that something serious was happening.  I'm also glad that I read all of these posts, especially your post Ptera1140.  I hurt my neck and upper back approximately a week ago and now that I think about it, that is the same time it started happening.  So weird!  The pain is going subsiding; hopefully this fluttering will go away.

Have you ever had this before?
Avatar universal
hi! I have been having the same issue for a few days. I was quickly able to find out that it had to do with your brain producing the hormone oxytocin. Oxytocin is produced by your pituitary gland. I happen to have a pituitary tumor and that caused this. You can ask your doctor for a prolactin test to see if you may have a pituitary problem as well. I hope this information helps someone.

So I had this vaginal flutter myself and I thought I was hopeless as I read these responses... I found my ex boyfriends bracelet that is thick threaded and not gold or metal.... one good whiff and no tremor since... pheromones are powerful and apparently my little lady down there was missing him

I know this is from 2008 but I just had this happen to me and I read somewhere that magnesium works so I tried it and I no longer have any flutter sensation! Hopes this helps you all!

Hello, so I've heard somewhere that it is magnesium deficiency as well. So i started taking a magnesium supplement a week ago every day and it still hasn't stopped. How long did it take for the feeling to finally go away?

I am having the same fluttering-bubbling sensation in my vagina.  Now I have intermittent right groin pain. At first I thought it was gas. So glad I came to this site.  I am going to the GYN  next Friday and will keep you updated.  After reading some of the posts and hearing other people say they had groin pain,I did some googling about nerves and came across Pudendal Neuralgia.   There are many different symptoms associated with this but feeling a lump or foreign body in the vagina is one.  And that is a good description of what I feel.  Feels like a lump and then a bubble flutter feeling and I have pain in my right groin.  Will be interesting to see what the GYN has to say.

Any updates??

I concur! b/c my fluttering didn't begin until I stressed my back. So I too believe it is a nerve..
now whether damaged or just a muscle issue?? we'll have to seek medical attention.
But a gyn won't help... in my humble opinion.
I'm seriously thinking about a chiropractor .. I have hip problems [catches & spasms] too.... which seems to coincidentally begin all about the same time.

Also related to the eye muscle spasms (which I sometimes have) dehydration or stress can bring on involuntary muscle spasms. Maybe just a different area spasming? Drink up and see if that helps?!

That makes perfect sense! Ptera1140. I have been recently having pains and discomfort in my neck and right about the same time, the fluttering started. As most have said, it doesn't hurt but it is annoying as hell. I'm 56 years old, post menopause and have no issues with my sex life. This thing is just a distraction but I wish it would stop. You may be on to something with the nerve connection.

The best way I can describe what I'm feeling is it feels like involuntary kaegel exercises, but more rapid. It almost feels like those muscles are spasming. For me there is no pain, just very annoying. It also makes me feel as though the muscles are trying to keep something from falling out. I afraid something is wrong and the doctors just can't detect it. I don't take medication normally and was just prescribed gapabentin and was wondering if anyone else is taking it. This is the only medication I'm on and the only change in my life. So I'm wondering if this is a side effect that hasn't yet been discovered. I just want this to stop

I am glad I'm not the only one....as I thought I was. But, feel bad that there are so many of us with this issue and no one can figure out what is the cause or solution........GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL!!

p.s.  If anyone finds out what's causing this, please post it.....THANK YOU!!!

I've started having the same thing 3 days ago, fluttering, vibrating or buzzing on left side of vulva. I'm scared I thought it was an std but been to the doc everything negative. Its scary and confusing.

Hi, I've had this fluttering, on and off, for the last 3 years.  I have MS but neuro doc says it's not MS.  Gyno dr. says it's not gynecological and Internist says he doesn't know.  I watched a medical mystery about a woman who had non-stop orgasms (not as much fun as it sounds I guess); her dr. discovered she had a cyst at the base of her spine.  Maybe our issue is somehow related?

About four days ago I started  twitching, fluttering, throbbing in my front clitorus area. I hate it it's not even close to an orgasm. I cannot control it, it is very hard to sleep at night and very hard to concentrate on anything else during the day. it's the most annoying irritating feeling. When I Google the symptoms it comes up with Vulvodynia. I'm wondering if it has to do with some type of damage or injury to that area. As embarrassing as this is I have a motorized massager that I used to masturbate that area and I'm wondering if I damaged it somehow that cause these symptoms

I don't suppose anyone ever found out what this is caused by? I just started having this symptom, its so strange. I am four weeks into radiation therapy for breast cancer and thought it may somehow be related? Does anyone have any updated info? Thanks.

I was online doing some research on this and came up with this from WebMD.  It is pretty interesting and goes along with what I was thinkingAmazingly, questions arise on the Women’s Health Board about vibrating sensations in the vagina or pelvic floor at least once a month. I have done MULTIPLE literature searches at the National Library of Medicine site, and other search engines – none of which have ever yielded a conclusive answer. My best GUESS is fasciculations – small nerve twitches which induce small muscle twitches. This would be analogous to twitches of the muscles of the eye lid.

Most of us have had these uncontrollable eye lid spasms (“blepharospasms”) at one time or another. The triggers for eye lid spasms are fatigue, caffeine use, stress. Some treatments are pressure applied near to the twitching muscle, or even Botox.

There is another name for involuntary sustained muscle contractions which can lead to abnormal movements. They are called focal dystonias. Most of the focal dystonias include the neck, eye lid, mouth/jawbone, even writer’s cramp. The start of such conditions can be after a trauma to the body part – or they can arise without apparent cause. There may be a genetic predisposition. The exact cause is not well understood, but the area can be injected with botox which causes the affected muscle to relax.

For more information on the more severe forms of focal dystonias, the Dystonia Society website offers a good overview.

I have this too. IIt will radiate in my whole body and I feel like shaking.
I am wondering if it is related to stress or caffeine because it will go away for long periods of time and then come back and I have drank soda heavily on and off and I think the last time this happened I was drinking a lot of it. .  I am also under a lot of stress with school so it could be that.  I also just went on new medication but it doesn't say anything in the warnings about this so I think it isn't that.
