Hi,
Fibromyalgia syndrome is associated with dozens of different symptoms, many of which are commonly found in other illnesses. Some fibromyalgia sufferers are initially misdiagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a disease of the central nervous system. It could be vice versa , you could have MS symptoms and could be misunderstood as Fibromyalgia . Some times MRI is normal in MS .
Here is a comparison of the symptoms of both the conditions . Kindly relate to them and decide which one you are suffering from and take the treatment accordingly .
Fibromyalgia is characterized by inflammation or pain of muscles ,connective tissue layers of bones and joints . Body parts affected are muscular areas of the back, neck, shoulders, chest, arms ,hips and thighs . Stiffness and weakness , sudden painful muscle spasms (charley horse ) that worsen with activity , nodules or localized areas that are tender to the touch (trigger points ) , Fatigue and difficulty in sleeping are the main features of Fibromyalgia .
Multipe Sclerosis [MS] is a chronic disorder affecting many nervous-system functions. It affects the central nervous system(brain and spinal cord ).
Symptoms include - eye problems, such as intermittent blurred or double vision , weakness , difficulty with walking or balance problems , loss of sensation, numbness, tingling , tremor, speaking difficulty , loss of bladder or bowel control ,extreme mood swings . .
However there are chances that you could be suffering from both Fibromyalgia and MS .Hope this helps you . Take care and regards !
Hi,
I have been having the same symptoms that you are having. I started with neck and shoulder pain got trigger point injections did not help then I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia 3 years ago. and was prescribed elavil and muscle relaxers. and I was still feeling fatigue. I had a thyroid test done about 6 months ago and my thyroid was off. I was diagnosed with
thyroiditis or hypothyroid. Taking synthroid. I have more energy and a little less pain
Thank you for your helpful information re Fibro & M.S.
Thought I was going nuts!
I have had both symtoms.
I think my G.P. thinks I'm a hypocondriach (not sure if that's how you spell it!)
Due to go back and see her.
Towards the end of 07 I got so frustrated that I could'nt verbally explain what was going on. I actually drew a picture with my symtoms on (it looked like a an 8yr old had drawn it) and gave it to my G.P. Alzi Consult (he said I hadn't got dementure ref me to Neuro Spec).
I didn't even consider M.S. until it was mentioned by my G.P. over the phone.
I compiled a list of symptoms and brief history for the Neuro Spec. When I was being examined he wouldn't even look at what I'd written. Told me to tell him in my own
words this I found very difficult. When I mentioned about my memory being bad he
interrupted and said the Alzi Consult had said there was no problem with my memory.
I felt quite taken back by this comment. I'd only seen the Alzi Consult for 2 sessions of 30 mins and that was verbal. My support worker went with me on the first one. My poor short term memory and poor long term memory have caused me to be totally
disfunctional since I started with the Thyroid problem and I have witneses to prove it.. It did improve a little when they put me on thryroxine.
I feel like they don't believe me and it's an awful feeling! I've always been honest.
Feel a bit nervous about how to relate this to my G.P. All this knocks my confidence and self belief. But I'm determined to get to grips with it.
Once again thank you for your help.
