A clarification of "cows"

Just to allay the fears of those skinny witches on here, the term "old cow" came from a lovely 19-year-old (she claimed, likely younger) member many moons ago who dubbed some of us old cows for having the audacity to advise her maybe she should wait a while before TTC. Seems around that time we were having an influx of members coming on in horrible financial positions and fledgling relationships wanting to conceive. So for our efforts in advising that they wait until they were more stable, ie had a job, insurance, a committed relationship, sobriety, etc we were dubbed Old Cows.

At the time, I was 26 or 27, not old by anyone's standards and I was markedly thinner :-) Not that I think I am necessarily a heifer now, but you know what I mean.

So there it is. That does not mean you have to believe the same. It is just the story of the cows title.

Oh, I am a TOTAL old cow! I'm 41, and a HALF, and have been a member of MH since December of 2006. And still no kid. What's up with that? I recently realized that I'm completely over the loss of our baby. I mean, truly completely and totally over it. It's been more than 2 years since we lost him and I have finally stopped feeling sad and and am through grieving. And it feels AWESOME! I am going back on Clomid this next cycle and going back to acupuncture and plan to be knocked up by Christmas!

How's that for posititve thinking???

What the heck was the name of the guy who walked around with the sock puppets on his wanker?  I am drawing a blank.

Shady Acres!! Sunny Acres is their arch rival when it's time for the Geriatric Domino Super Slam. Yes, I believe islandprincess is doling out the Viagra and making sock puppets!

Annie- for me, it depends on which forum. Honestly, on the pregnancy 18-35 forum, i avoid most posts where I know I'll get attacked for being honest. it's always posts like "can i give my 8 month old cow's milk?" This is a relatively recent example. Many people were telling the poster that "mommy knows best for her baby." Well, mommy doesn't know physiology. I got attacked for stating the AAP's recommendation of formula/breast milk until 12 months. It's things like that that get to me.

On the maternal and child forum, there are more people who are knowledgable about some things so my response doesn't stick out like a sore thumb, waiting to get bitten off.

About sugarcoating -- I think there are definitely posters who come on and just want someone to say, "Yes, honey!  You are right and everyone else is wrong!"  It's always tough to try to figure out what to say when a person is doing something really boneheaded, or deluding themselves.  It's often such posters who are the most defensive, angry and sorry for themselves if they get comments contrary to what they want to hear.  So what do you do, write "Awww, hon, I know how you feel, you're probably right," or give some kind of more factual advice?

Also, the PG 35+ is not as likely to be inundated with with teenyboppers trying to have a baby with Joe Blow Unemployed either.

MC has been the dumping ground for many years, so a Google search will often lead them there and there they plant their seeds.

I am the one least likely to sugarcoat something, but hopefully many will agree that they can see my compassion for those who really touch me. I spend more time communicating via email or PM than on the forums. I can only take so many ridiculous attacks or defensive responses to poor parenting before I need to back off.

No offense taken tired.  I do think over on Pregnancy 35+ we tend to be a little more "sugary".  Not sure why that is except that so many of us have struggled so much getting or staying pregnant that staying positive is all we can do once we are. Due to the age factor, we have an awful lot of miscarriages, so  it can almost be like a "hand holding" forum more then anything, although I think most try to give good advice, at least to the best of their knowledge.

The posts I find the most frustrating are definately the "am I pregnant" and as Annie said, the "can I get pregnant with my tubes tied".   However I suppose there are those that really don't know.....how they don't know I am not sure, and I often wonder how many are real vs. trolls.  I will still never understand what trolls get out of fake posts.

** disclaimer **
The previous post is not meant to imply that any members here who happen to post on the pregnancy forum do not give good or accurate advice.

what I find to be very interesting is the difference between the M&C forum, and the pregnancy forum. Some people post the same question on both, and they get VERY different responses. The pregnancy forum seems to be about sugarcoating and assuring everyone that mommy always knows what's best for her baby, even if it goes against current AAP recommendations. Posters on M&C are more likely to be a bit more straighforward.

Oh, another one we are having a run on in Maternal & Child is people complaining that their ultrasound shows a pregnancy of some length and they are certain it is a different length.  We didn't used to get those at all, and now we have several.

"Seems around that time we were having an influx of members coming on in horrible financial positions and fledgling relationships wanting to conceive."  Andi, you think that has changed?  LOL

One thing I notice in Maternal & Child is that, besides the perennial favorites, "Am I pregnate," and "Who is the father," we go through lots of the same question for a while, like weeks and weeks, and then begin to go through lots of some different question and the old one is not seen for a while.  Lately, it's been "Can the Magic Fairy come and untie my tubes because I've now met the love of my life but I don't have any money," but we have not seen, for example, so many miscarriage posts (we used to get two or three in a row from different posters that would all be about miscarrying at 7 weeks.)   Haven't seen any faked multiple pregnancies, nor "I took [dangerous substance] and now I wonder if I damaged the baby," nor defenses of being an unmarried mom; have not seen any vaccines-are-bad posts for a long time, nor arguments about circumcision.  (Not even that many "can I get pregnant after ablation" posts, though there have been a few.)  I'm sure they will come up again -- maybe the miscarriage posters are all going to the Miscarriage forum now but the others will be bound to show up sooner or later.

I would sure be happy if they would create an "Am I Pregnant?" forum and allow us to move all such queries straight to there.

took me a while to appreciate the wisdom of the old cows. When I first joined MH, I was slightly scandalized by the blatant truth thrown out there. I got over that very quickly :)
