Odds of passing Asperger's on.

My  fiancée and I are planning on having kids. I have Asperger's Syndrome. What are the odds of passing it on to our kids? what are the odds of having severely autistic kids? I'm in my mid 20's so age isn't a factor, no one on either side has any major form of mental retardation, and the only people in my family (2) to have Asperger's can function normally. All of the data I can find so far (I'm in college and have access to a Journal Library) mostly discusses parent's of the autistic and the majority of the web comes up with the same. 2 universities in New York have found a random Gene mutation that is thought to be a contributor from the parents of the Autistic, supported by the fact that if one child has it, odds climb to 1 in 5 the next will, but what are the odds for the children if one parent is already autistic. Has anyone studied us yet?

Yes. I too have read many articles, but everyone is backed by research financed by large pharmaceutical companies; and this is then used to lobby Governments.

Thimerosal is a preservative used in vaccines, and contains organic mercury, which is more than a thousand times more toxic than non-organic mercury.

There's not a single accredited member of the scientific community, independent of their positions for or against there being any links with Autism, that will deny the fact "that organic mercury is a highly toxic substance," and that there are alternative non-toxic preservatives readily available in vaccines. The alternatives also generate profits, but for other groups that haven't been lobbying Governments to widely disperse Thimerosal.

Whether there is a link or not between Thimerosal and Autism doesn't change the fact that as a parent you have to choose if there is any business putting a highly toxic substance in what seems ever increasing doses in your child's vaccines, or if you will instead you will opt for the non-toxic preservative for the same vaccines.

Disclosure: I am not associated with any research, Government, or Pharmaceutical group, nor do I hold any financial securities in these groups.

I just did a course in learning disorders and the leader showed his whole family tree with dyslexia, dyspraxia, and aspergers and ADHD.

My family are the same!

ALSO Just because the lancet and all the experts have said that there are no links with vaccinations, doesn't mean that there is not.  The experts are not always right, they are using the knowledge and understanding they have at this time, who knows how our understanding will change in the future.

Two comments:
The genetics of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) remain to be fully understood, but evidence to date strongly supports a genetic component to ASDs. A search in PubMed (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez) will produce useful material on the subject. But the risk of passing on an ASD is quite low according to recent medical genetics studies.

Vaccines have nothing to do with ASDs at all. A British study from the 90s claimed such a link exists, but that study has since not only been retracted by the Lancet (which published it), and denounced by the co-authors, but its primary author is now facing charges for fraud related to that study.

All other attempts to find a link between MMR or similar vaccines and autism have failed. No one in the autism research community currently thinks there is any connection.

I have recently found out that I have aspergers through working with children/young adults with learning difficulties and when I mentioned this to my parents it turns out I had been diagnosed with this at 5 but they chose not to mention it to me!!

Thanks Mozartcowgirl,
This is the exact site I was looking for. I couldn't believe they lifted the legal limit on mercury just so they could get the shots out quickly. THEN on top of that reccomended it to those who are most vulnerable...Pregnant women and children. Yikes!
The drug companies are making millions on an injection and they don't even know if it works. Scary stuff!
Mercury is a poison, don't let someone inject into your body! (my 2 cents again)

Also, Mozartcowgirl, I saw another post you did and TOTALLY agree with you. So glad you embrace yourself and accept your self the way you are...there are so many blessings that those with Asperger's have. I don't have it, but feel I am the one with the disadvantage sometimes.  My daughter (age 21) feels as you do. I am so glad.
Take care,
Carolyn (2 children with Asperger's)

I am curious where you've gotten the information that the H1N1 vaccine has more mercury than any other vaccine like you state? Not to say that it isn't true, I'm just curious, that's all.

I agree with Mozartcowgirl.
I have 2 children on the Autism Spectrum and one who isn't. I believe the vaccinations had a lot to do with it. Once my oldest was diagnosed we never did the rest of the kids. NO FLU SHOTS either, because they have mercury. The H1N1 Has more mercury than any other shot out there. Please don't get them, especially if you have autism in your family. Do your research.
That's my 2 cents.
Take care all,
Carolyn

I was given the MMR shot in 1976.  I was diagnosed with autism several years later. Now, apsergers.  I have 7 children. One that passed away from hsi 9 week old shots. My 2 1/2 year old.. has had no shots.. and displays signs of aspergers. my 16 year old displays signs.. but not as severe as mine.  i believe genetically.. its there.. but dormant until something triggers itto be more severe..  I believe that it can be passed down, and when something triggers a certain gene, things just get worse. I also believe that certain foods, additives, vaccinations, ( all) trigger it,, or make it more severe. I know that when i eat things with certain things in it.. hours.. or days.. or even minutes later.. i go full blown autistic.

My son, 22, has Asperger's. Your answer is the most coherent and thoughtful I've ever heard. Makes sense. Thanks.
BTW, my niece on my side is fully Autistic, along with a nephew on my husband's side. I believe certain DNA are more prone to it (not sure how to say it)

Since Autism is not founded to be genetic, yet, but more envrionmental, the odds of having an Autistic child may not be a factor.

I have three children. My eldest has Asperger's while the other two show no signs of any behavioral or educational redardation. Neither my husband nor I have any history or diagnosis of Asperger's and yet here is my 12 year old son.

I know there are many, many studies going around trying to find out where Autism comes from and how it surfaces, but, to date, no one has answers. Many, many guesses, but nothing definitive. I have heard everything from whey, sugar, glucose, preservatives, genetics, immunizations and everything in between.

I hope someone on here has a little more positive feedback for you...as you know, with Autism, there are so many questions. I can only imagine how frustrating it is for you. I know as a Mother, how frustrating it is.

Good luck and God Bless!
Your Friend,
Mariann
