Hospitalized - now on bed rest!
Hi Ladies! It's been wayyyyy too long!
Well, back on December 28th I had a light (annoying) headache that was lingering, so I went to bed a lil early. I went to sleep at night and woke up @ 1:30am to go pee. Normally I can fall right back asleep, but instead I felt like my heart was racing, like it was almost hard for me to really catch my breath - and the headache was still there. I definately couldn't fall back asleep and my husband woke up too. Finally 1-1/2 hours later @ 3am I was able to turn the TV on and fell back asleep. My alarm went off @ 5:45am and I got ready and went to work. My headache was still there so I took 1 Tylenol. I worked a full 8-hr day (I'm a sonographer at the hospital I'll deliver at.. and I'm on my feet all day). I had a routine OB appt scheduled for the next day, so I was just going to wait to tell them about it at the appt but I started worrying about what if it happened again that night. I called them and had me walk upstairs to their office so they could check my vitals. When I was up there the nurse took my blood pressure and it was 150/90, which is quite high for me. The doctor came in and he took it and said it was in the 140's and he wanted me to walk to L&D so they could hook me up to a monitor for a lil while.
I was only just 33-wks. I went to L&D and they put me on the monitor. My blood pressure went down a lil bit but remained elevated. I was there from 5pm - 7pm and just when I thought they were going to let me go home, they said that the mointor was showing several contractions - I wasn't even feeling them!
That's when they said they were admitting me. They needed to determine if I was pre-eclamptic or if I just had PIN (Pregnancy-Induced Hypertension). Also they needed to find out if I was in pre-term labor. Once they admitted me they took a vaginal swab to do a FFN test (Fetal Fibronectin test) which would give them a good idea if I would deliver (or go into full labor) within the next 2-wks. Thank God that came back NEGATIVE! They also began a 24-hr urine collection to see how much protein was in my urine (if I had above a certain amount it would signify that I had pre-eclampsia). Just in case the baby decided to come early they decided to give me a steroid injection to help baby Brooklyn's lungs develop - they take the dose and give you the first half (a BURNING shot in the butt cheek) and then they give you the other half 24-hrs later. While I was in the hospital they did several NST's (Non-stress tests) and they also ordered 2 ultrasounds: a BPP (Biophysical Profile) and a 2nd/3rd Trimester to determine an EFW (estimated fetal weight). The baby did EXCELLENT on her NST's, her BPP, AND her EFW was approximately 4lbs 10oz! My doctor got the results from my 24-hr Urine Test and my protein levels were below the threshold, so he diagnosed me with Pregnancy-Induced Hypertension NOT Pre-Eclampsia - thank God!!! He said that I could be discharged the next day as long as my blood pressure remained stable, BUT... NO RETURNING TO WORK UNTIL I DELIVER!!!! He put me on a "modified" bed rest (at home). They said that I should lay down in bed or on the couch most of the time, but I can get up to go the bathroom, to shower, and now I can drive myself to doctor's appts. They don't want me to do laundry, dishes, cooking, cleaning, or driving around to "just do errands". It's sooooo hard to be at home and finally have the TIME to do everything I want to prepare for the baby.. but I'm not supposed to - it's torture!
I had already called out of work for the last two days and I was supposed to "take call" for 15-hrs on New Year's Eve! Oh well - doctor's orders!! So, I told my boss - she took it pretty good! Good thing I took out Voluntary Disability Insurance through my work.. now I'm able to collect 60% of my pay while I'm out. So I was discharged at noon on New Year's Eve. Brooklyn made it from 2009 to 2010 (at least we're in the right year now)! Now we're half-way through January, if she stays in 19 more days she'll make it to February (the right month)! Until then, I see my OB every Monday for a "routine" appt and I go to L&D every Thursday for a NST. So far my blood pressure is a tiny bit high (but within normal limits) and the baby is doing wonderful!
I had my routine 35-wk OB appt this past Monday where they took a culture to test for Group B (Beta Strep) bacteria. I just got my results back today and it came back positive (of course, just my luck)! It just means that when I do go into labor and they put my IV in place, in addition to fluid they'll also attach a bag of Penicillin. I know that it's not a big deal though, my office told me that 30% of all people test positive for it and that it's a bacteria in the intestinal track (which is why they check the vagina & anus). They assure me that as long as I get the antibiotics the baby will be fine and that they don't even TEST the baby (unless you don't get the complete treatment of antibiotics).
Now I have a NST scheduled in L&D @ 1:30pm today, so hopefully that goes well.. I'm not worried though - baby Brooklyn always does well on HER tests.. it's just ME that doesn't do well on mine! Lol.

I read your journal - it sounds like our experiences have been EXACTLY the same (which is very comforting to me to know other people are not only going through a "similar" thing, but the "exact" same thing)!
