Ankle pain

Ok this one is really weird. My ankle started hurting around 5 this evening. It feels like I have twisted or sprained it. But the weird part is that unlike a twisted or sprained ankle it feels better when I put weight on it, and hurts the most if there is no weight on it. Any one have any ideas about this?

I have had the same problem. I would hurt to flex or rotat my ankle and I knew I hadn’t done anything to injur it.  It lasted for a while then overnight it was gone. Now I’m having a flare up and my ankle hurts again, and like you it would feel better standing on it

I have had the same thing this week, How long did yours last. I have had foot pain in the past. But, this was ankle and back of ankle. Very painful. Felt the same as other pains I have had in hips, feet, arms etc, but more debilitating due to not sure how to manage the severity. Thanks

My ankle started hurting today out of nowhere and the pain goes all the way to my hip.  I don't remember hurting myself and it hurts while lifted or with weight on it. I try to bend down while weight is on it and my WHOLE KNEE AND LEG GIVE WAY. It hurts so bad. Any ideas?

My ankles, legs, and knees will do that same thing.  Sometimes the only thing that will help is to wrap them very tightly with ace bandages.  I know, sounds weird right?

My legs jerk and spasm constantly.  It drives me crazy at times.  I did finally find relief from this and it was when I was in the hospital having my surgery.  They put these wraps around the lower leg and they alternated pumping up with air, then slowly releasing it, then pumping up again.  I can't remember what it was called but they use it to prevent blood clots forming.  It keeps the blood flowing in the legs.

My legs did not spasm even one time as long as I had them on.  When I got home I talked to my home nurse about this and to my surprise she said that she could get me one to use at home.  Now I can't wait for it to get here.

This makes me think that the pain and jerking is caused from poor circulation.  When I think about it I am sitting or laying most of the time.  I'm unable to walk for any length of time at all so I can see why this would help.  It's something you might check into if you have good health insurance.

I'm not saying this is everyone's problem but because of the relief I received from it I'm pretty sure it's my problem.

I wish you the best and I hope I have helped in some way.

I'll be praying,
Carol

Sorry but i couldn't help laughing at your "pain is really no pain and no pain is really pain" comment, Murphy strikes again lol!

I'd still say its parasthesia, you dont have correct pain signals, numb or lacking in normal sensations would explain why you can hurt your self and yet your not getting the correct pain signals to know you have injured your self. If for example you look at what often happens with Autism, they can walk on a broken leg with out knowing its brocken and experience the most imense pain from a brocken finger nail, abnormal pain responses are just that, abnormal and probably have a mind of their own.

Your explaination makes sense to me as far as why the pain goes away with weight on my ankle. But after reading it I would expect that it is only a one way wonko nerve signal. I say this because I often hurt myself with no idea or memory of how I got hurt.

a few years ago I was sitting watching TV one evening when I noticed my right foot was covered in blood .I had no idea of how I hurt my foot. I got up to go to the bathrrom to clean and bandage it when I noticed bloody footprints all over my home, into the Kitchen bedrrom, and bathroom. So I must have cut open my foot hours before.

Also since I was walking across my kitchen when I first felt like my ankle was sprained I probably did sprain or twist it without knowing. And now what is being recived by my brain as pain is really no pain and no pain is really pain.

Here's my clue, Murphy's Law is at work, which loosely translate as 'what ever can happy, will happen.' I'm actually thinking that your signals are wonky, paresthesia, your experiencing pain that makes you think sprained anckle but the relief is the opposite of what would occur if it was in fact a sprained anckle. So, in my thinking, your relief is from altering the sensation your getting by applying pressure, thus altering the signals to your brain.

Pat: Hmm where do i begin, you've described some of what i have and what i've been told for the last 20 or so years is "just poor circulation" my left foot now goes a lovely shade of blue/black if my legs bend for even a short space of time. My leg has been twitching, pulsing and cramping for so many years i cant even recall when it first started getting really weird, though its only been a few weeks since the buzz (vibrations) started between my knee and my anckle, which happen no matter what angle my leg. My left leg is the one that does the intention tremor, my right is pretty good but is doing the purple people eater dance, and it does this other weird thing of rippling like a crawling worm under the skin.

No idea if MS is causing it all, suss isn't it, what i have worked out is that if it was something like PAD (periferal artery disease) then you get releif from hanging your legs over the edge of the bed, so hanging without any weight, so it cant be that if your saying standing helps, even though you then loose feeling in your foot. I know with me the only good standing does is with colour change, so there is blood flow issues with the periferal arteries. Now i have found in neurology books, that mentioned lesions but i cant remember where it is, i'll have another look.

Murphy strikes again!

Cheers.........JJ

Where exactly is the pain, and what type of pain is it?

Thanks for all of the comments. My ankle is syill hurting like it was sprained or something. I am wondering if it might be something with the tendons in the area? I have heard of some medications causing tendon problems, but I don't know if any of my 17 mesd would be on that list or not.

I’m in process of a diagnosis & have been told MS is an “alert”  So I was in a boot for almost a wk. from an ankle issue that started by awakening me one night stiff & hurting. I tried to move it & it popped. Next morning I could not take a step. Podiatrist diagnosis was Tendonitis. Anyone ever heard of that happening?

Thought I would add by bit in here too and maybe we could learn by consensus, that anything goes with this MonSter - lol

The pains I get in my legs are not relieved by standing but massage can help

Strange buzzes and cramps and tingling in my feet are often relieved by standing

However, my question to add to this is that when I have been standing for a while my left foot will go numb (thats the one that trembles too) and even moving around will not get rid of it, I have to sit and put my feet up? is this poor circulation or MS?

This is all complicated by the fact that my MS Nurse feels that I have a capillary problem caused by MS which randomly causes my feet to go a strange colour.

Strange folk are we?

Maybe there is something about the muscle contraction that is required for weight bearing that eases the pain.  Maybe it somehow supports the hurting part?  (shrugging)

Hi Dennis,
I don't have this particular pain but I have noticed that my pains and spasms in my feet and or legs either slow or stop when I am standing.  Perhaps all that pull of gravity and the weight bearing has something to do with slowing the signals?

As usual, I'm just making guesses here.  Anyone else have a clue?

Strange because two nights ago my ankle started hurting like it was sprained.  When I crossed my legs and one ankle rested on the other I had this weird pain.  Never thought much about it until I read your post.
