feeding our 1 year old

Hey, ladies... My son is still not self-feeding very well.  He CAN feed himself, but he won't... I'm so frustrated... I feel like he should be feeding himself much more, and he also won't eat the 3rd foods... he gags himself on them every time I try them... He can feed himself cheetos, suckers, those gerber graduate things that look like cheetos, the gerber graduate yogurt melts, small pieces of fruit, he even has tried pieces of cooked potatoe and I gave him some turkey sandwich meat... He will seriously only eat like 2-3 bites of anything by himself, then throws it down and hollars for our food which I know he can't eat, so then I start feeding him his baby food, and it's like a fight to the death... you know he's hungry, but I have to put my hand on his head with a pillow behind his head before he'll open his mouth for a bite and half of the bites he slings his head around like he's just so mad.

I just feel like he's behind in this area... he's using a sippy cup, he's running around everywhere, trying to talk, pointing, but meal time is like torture... what are y'all feeding y'all's little ones?

How is the self-feeding going for y'all???

Oh, yeah and he only has 2 teeth (bottom front)

Brielle has her days with food, sometimes all she wants is those gerber crunchys, other days she's interested in all sorts of things. She really likes cheese, potatoes, salmon, pickles, ham and green beans. She loved the cake we gave her on her b-day! it was pretty cute!
We just had her 1 year check up and she was 18.4 pounds and 29 1/3 inches long. 50th percentile for height and only 10 for weight, but her pediatrican said she looks great so dont worry.
It does seem that she has a lazy eye, I had her checked by my eye dr at 6 months and am taking her back on friday. I'm pretty certain she will need glasses or surgery :( trying  not  to think about it yet.....

mommy2b- i wouldnt worry to much about the food, our dr. said 1-2 year olds are extremely picky and will love some things and then hate them the next day. He said as long as Brielle is having formula or breastmilk a few times a day she'll be ok. So dont stress!!!

oh wow makes me feel like a bad mom.... i have been feeding daniel table food(mashed potatoes, green beans,ect..) since he was about 6 months old... and at 11 days from being 1... he is pretty much eating everything we are.  from pizza to ice cream and everything in between.  he has 8 teeth (has had them since about 6-7 months old) and throws a fit when we feed him with a spoon... he will sometimes take the 3rd foods stuff but it is only if he is very hungry or we are out and about.  he hasnt started walking yet, but is crawling and trying to climb everywhere... he pulls himself up, but just not taking off walking yet.  i just started really introducing a sippy cup cause he starts to chew on bottle nipple and putting holes in it.. hubby says the next hole he puts in a bottle... that the bottles are gone.  yesterday i only gave him a sippy during the day and then he took his bottle at bedtime... i can live with that, but i feel it is too soon to take the bottle completely away.
he doesnt gag with food, but he has started to try to put his hand down his throat and gags himself like that.... and i tell him no and take his hand down.  he likes to chew on his own toes... yuck! lol
anyhow that is how things have been here.... and yes Mommy2B... all of these things (milestones) will happen when he is good and ready and not a moment before...lol

(hubby wants to introduce potty already... i say that is pushing it just a little.. but what do i know? lol)

Thanks... today he acted like he was very interested in some bites of a hot dog, so maybe I was just pushing it a little too hard... I suppose he'll do it when he's ready :)

Right now Kyra is self feeding part of the time.  We are just now starting to add a substantial amount of solids into her diet.  We still are feeding her baby food, but our pediatrician said she would let us know when she is done with it.  While I don't know what food for you to try, but maybe he is just trying to tell you that he is ready for the next step in food.  We never could get Kyra to eat the stage 3 foods b/c she would gag on it also.  I think it was just the fact that it was a baby food consistency and then all the sudden she would get a large chunk.  I was just at the pediatricians today and she told me that anything we eat Kyra can have also, so maybe when he acts like he wants what you are eating let him have a little of it.  I am sorry you are having such a tough time, but I hope it gets better for you!
