Hi Nicole, My name is Jody and my baby was just recently diagnosed with a  cystic hygroma at 9 weeks. What is your due date? What was the outcome?

I'm going to be the bearer of bad news but after reading your queations again I don't think your doctor has told you everything yet. Normally when a cystic hygroma is detected is can mean a hand full of things and most of the time it is one of then. There could be chromosone problems like Down sydrome, Turner sydrome, and Edward sydrome are the most common. Or there could be defects like heart defects, club feet, cleft pallet (with my daughter it was a third nipple but the genetic consellor will not inform you on the small things). Or they could just have a mass on them (normally on the back of the neck) that can be removed after birth. Most of the time doctors and genetic consollor will tell you the best thing is to termanate the pregnancy even before amino is completed. With an amino it will tell you sex, and if there is any chromosone problems. Down sydrome is not a death sentence, but it turner the child will be a girl (only girls have it ) the health problems can range from short and not being able to have children, to having major heart problems and not being able to servive outside the womb. With Edward it is the worse (look up 99 ballons on the internet it is about a family thats child was born with edward) most of the time the baby will not live outside of the womb and the oldest children with edward was 2 years old (there is no other child on record living longer then that with edward). But if you look up on medhelp about cystic hygroma there are many good stories about their children being healthy and nothhing wrong like my daughter a third nipple is no big deal. Most of the time a cystic hygrome means there is a defect and anything out of the normal is consided a defect. Just follow doctors orders and take care of yourself. If you have any more question don't hesitate to ask. I would love it if you would keep me updated on your situation.

you can ask me as many and as personal as you want I know when I was in your shoes i wish i had someone to help me through everything. My daughter is now 9 months and healthy as can be just very same she only weighs 13 lbs. At birth she was 5'1 lbs. After we found out about the hygroma we agreed to go with the amino (very painful) after a few weeks we found out it was a girl and no chromosone defects. Our doctor decided because we had so many u/s in the past (i bleed from the day i found out i was preg until three days before she was born) that we didn't need to do a echo because in all the u/s her heart looked good. They still told me that i could have a still born and if i went into labour early that good chance she was dead. On sept.22/09 I went to the hospital due to major cramping and pain (i wanted to know if i was in labour because i also have two other children and i needed to get them to their grandparents that live an hour away). She was born sept. 23 at 2:32pm and she was healthy alittle jondice from being early. she was 4.3 weeks early. She had to stay in the nicu to be watched but she was healthy. All she has in a third nipple. Our genetic concellor never informed us that it could be something as small as a third nipple all she did was tell us all the major things that would be wrong. I will contiune to let you know that rest of the story but i got to go see my dad for fathers day.

Thank you so much for responding back to me so quickly! What was your daughters outcome? Did the hygroma go away on its own or did she have to have surgery? How was your pregnancy? Did you have to have a c-section? Were you healthy through out the pregnancy? Im sorry there are so many thoughts and questions running through my mind? If there is any question too personal and you are not comfortable with answering I understand. This is my 1st pregnancy and Im just really concerned for my babys health as well as my own.
