The risk for headaches from epidurals is about 1 in 100 and usually the doc can tell by how the epidural goes in if the risk will be lower or higher. There is also a procedure that can be done to take the headache away. In my 2 1/2 years working in OB in the hospital I have not seen one "spinal" headache yet.

It is possible to have a natural birth in the hospital! Where I work we have midwives along with our OBs who do deliveries and many of our midwife patients go without meds. I'm using a midwife even though I will probably get an epidural, just because I like the midwife practice better -- more of a nursing model than a medical model of practice.

Definitely hospital! I'm an L&D nurse and have seen just how fast things can go wrong and I'm way too far from a hospital when minutes can matter. Plus I'm pretty sure I'm going to want an epidural, I know my pain tolerance or should I say lack there of ;) To each their own though!

When my doctor asked yesterday about pain meds, I told her I wanted to go natural.  She made and face and said why? LOL She is a riot.  I told her I did it without them with my son and he was over 10 lbs so I feel good about doing it again.  I have a small frame, but according to her as she was doing my pelvic exam, I have a good gestational pelvis to push a large baby out.  Too funny.  Anyway, I'm sure that has a lot to do with it along with an individual's pain tolerance.  It does really hurt, but I forgot about the pain and soon as I held my son.  And no headaches or vomiting that can happen with an epidural.

My girlfriend just gave birth (at home) after 42 weeks of pregnancy, to a 7.5 pound baby, all natural, in a birthing tub.

Dang, that gives me so much courage!  That's what I want!!!  I hear epidurals can give you the WORST headache!  yuck!

p.s its worth mentioning her baby was 9 lbs and she is maybe 100 pounds pre prego soaking wet, she is petite!!
mine baby was 6lbs 8ounces full term so maybe the larger baby made it worse?? No idea....

so my niece was born on sunday at home in a birthing tub!

My sil 1st comment to me...." oh my god that fing hurt, i am never doing that again"
she begged to go to the hospital and have drugs but the midwfie told her once she got admitted and all that it would be to late.....
this is someone who was extremely adiment about having as natural a birth as possible. She was as prepared as she could have been given it was her first baby. I didnt have any drugs and I plan on doing that same with this baby so I wonder if she just truly could not comprehand how much it was going to hurt. Yup it fiing hurts.

so my opinion is go as natural as you feel comfortable, for me that drug and epidural free but in a hospital. I dont see how it would hurt more or less in the hospital or at home in a birthing tub. pain is pain.

Ya I had no pain meds or epidural either. Just because you are in the hospital doesnt mean you cant have a "natural" birth.

Even though I gave birth to ds in the hospital, I did it without an epidural or other pain medications.  It was very empowering.  I think the waterbirths I've seen on tv are pretty amazing.

I made a compromise with my husband... he wants me in a hospital setting in case something  goes wrong and i want a birth without an epidural....so we are going to have a waterbirth in a birthing center because it can be homey, im not doped up and neither is the baby and if there are any complications, my husband isn't going to freak because im in a hospital..sort of

Although I see why women would like a home birth I am a hospital mama.
My dd came very fast and I laboured great making me a good candidate for a home birth however my blood pressure was very high, so high I had to stay 2 extra days.

I just know alot of women who have ended up with issues that required being in a hospital, a friend of my hemmeraged so bad she had to have 2 transfusions, and surgery. My sil had to have a forcep deliver b/c he was stuck....my aunte ended up with an emergency c-section. I just think for a 1st time mama since you have no idea how things may go it might be safer but im saying that lots of women do fine at home on the 1st.

My sister in law who was due on monday is having a home birth (1st baby) in a birthing tub with a mid-wife...I'll let you guys know how that goes. Could be good info.

I have always wanted to give birth @ home preferably in a water tub.....but with this being my 1st child and really not know how things will be I am opting to go the hospital route.  I feel like maybe after the 1st & knowing what to expect I may try the home birth when we plan for the 2nd.

I am definitely in the hospital corner.  My ds weighed over 10 pounds when they thought he would only be about 8.  I could never have had him at home and the outcome could've been disastrous for both of us.

However, I know people who have decided to go the home route and been perfectly fine.  I think it is a personal decision for everyone.  Just in my case, I think the risks far outweigh the rewards.
