Excessive Thirst

Hey everyone, i spoke with a professional last week who advised me to drink lots and lots of water.  do any of you guys suffer from excessive thirst? the dr said that not having alot of spinal fluid makes you very thirsty so it is important to take water with you wherever you go...
just a heads up, i know i cant live without lots of water.
p.s. i am new to the site and it is helping so much, a big hello to everyone :)

Hello. I have had crazy symptoms for a while. The strangest was thirst without peeing a lot. I drink more now that I ever had before amd pee the normal amount each day. I had a neurologist tell me I have Chiari but that the herniation wouldnt cause my symptoms. This is one of the first places I have seen there can be a link. Is there any more info on linking thirst to Chairi. Thank you all!

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum paulvand.
As for the thirst....many with Chiari do have other comorbid conditions....Hashimoto's, Syringomyelia,Tethered Cord, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome....and others, so the thirst issue could be any one of them...including Chiari....the herniation puts pressue on your brain stem and spinal cord this can affect ALL autonomic systems in the body, so why Drs dismiss symptoms we have is beyond me.
As for your output, you should be seen by a urologist since it is possible to again be a comorbid condition...I have a neurogenic bladder so I have all sorts of bladder issues....and I do tend to drink alot....but at this point I am not sure it is due to feeling excessivly thirsty....I just know I need to flush my bladder out and need fluids to help with my bowel issues too....KEEP in mind it is possible to drink TOO MUCH!!
May I ask, have you had a CINE MRI? DO you know if you have an obstruction to CSF flow?
Thanks for the reply. No just a regular MRI. I probably need to go to a Chairi specialist. My many symptoms come and go and I have been tested by a several different docs for a several things over 5+ years: addisons, sjorgrens, lyme, kidney issues, cardiac issues, neuological and so on. Too many to remember.
And there are still many more they will test you for before they will consider Chiari the possible  cause......
MS is often ruled out as well as Lupus.....and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is a condition that many with Chiari also deal with.
You are so right. I have had an MRI to roll out MS, and blood tests for Hashimoto's and so much else. I even had a somewhat painful nerve study to rule out ALS. Cant remember all the tests.  Stay safe!

Hi I am new to this community.  I was very happy and suprized to see your post.  I have a 1 year old that was just diagnosed.  He has an incredible thirst.  He seems to be thirsty ALL the time..  The pediatrician told me to switch him to a cup and he would drink less...NOT  he drinks 8-12 12oz glasses a day and 2 8 oz bottles.  At least I know its not just him.  Thanks to everyone who responded it was very enlightening

Mine don't peel, but I use lip gloss during the day, and Carmex at night!  ; )

Seriously, I mentioned it on another thread - when you brush your teeth, use your toothbrush to give one gentle swipe around your lips.  Don't scrub or brush the lips, just do it gently every day & before you know it - they'll be good as new!  (Lip exfoliation, I guess.)

Does anyone's lips peel from the excessive thirst?
My lips have been peeling like crazy for 4 weeks now, couldn't imagine what it might be? I just got checked for allergies.  It is the turn of the season and I am allergic to grass - - I have never had peeling lips like this before so I can't imagine it is the grass allergy.

Hi and welcome to the chiari forum.

I am a big water drinker too....I think we naturally compensate for what we r lacking...could be  the reason, but I drank so much water when I was working my DH bought me a mini fridge to keep it cold and right in my office : )

Saying that, in June, i had an ultrasound of my kidneys and they were seen to be retaining urine, and not emptying them out properly, went back 6 weeks later and they were fine, started to get the same sort of pain on and off for the past few weeks, fully expecting it all again.

I get that too and l am post op...in fact it got a little worse after the surgery. Interesting, considering that I should have enough CSF now...

When the thirsty feeling gets really bad I get a really burning, tingling tongue and even if I hold water in my mouth, it still doesn't soothe it. Does anyone else get that?

I have been looking for an answer for so long about this..

I would agree, my partner was the first to notice this in me, i can go through 2 bottles of juice or about 4-5 pints of water in an evening,  i kept calling him up when he was on his way home from work and was like can you pick up some squash please, he actually said it to me 3 days ago. I was like, mmmm i know but i don't know why.

But oddly i don't need to go to the toilet as often, i literally only go 2-3 times a day at the most.

Welcome to our expanding group, jessbee!

I won't leave the house without a bottle of water!  I keep a glass on my nightstand every night, and a couple times in the past week, I've actually had to get up and refill it...

Another symptom to add to the increasing list?
