Why did my ferret die? I am devastated

He began sleeping a lot for a few days, then suddenly began having seizures. The emergency vet wasn't sure what was wrong.Gave him an antibiotic injection and glucose to give him.
He continued to fit all night, I tried to comfort him and cried the whole time.
My own vet kept him in the next day but also seemed unsure.
Gave me home antibiotics, painkiller and special watern and food to syringe feed him.
He was weak but never had a seizure that night.
The next day i took him to the vet who wanted to put him to sleep. He seemed in no pain at that point so i took him home to say goodbye and asked the vet to phone the exotic pet hospital in the morning to see what else could be done.
Sadly he began to fit again that night and my sis and i decided we couldn't watch him suffer any longer.
The emergency vet put him to sleep.
He was lethargic, having trouble urinating, blood in urine, high temp and having seizures.
Don't think its insolumania, did i poison him ? Did he get brufen from my bag although i usually keep it zipped? Did i poison him with the odd bit of chocolate or the odd sweet? I didnt know it was bad for them and i had read ferret books.
Please don't be harsh, I've cried and tortured myself for 6 days solid. He was only one and a half and one of my prescious babies. i love and miss him so much.
I recently found that a small dose of diazepam would've helped his seizures, i just wish I'd gotten him to the exotic pet hospital or researched sooner.
I paid £160 and my baby died anyway. We buried him in a box in my sisters garden.
I am so miserable .

I am so sorry about your ferret. I have a friend that has 2 ferrets and she tells me the most wonderful stories about them. I'm sorry I can't even begin to guess what might have happened. Whatever it was took several days to set in and make him that sick. Most poisonings hit pretty fast, within 24 hours. I'm wondering if he had some illness. You're right - taking him to a vet that specializes in exotics may have been a better choice. Not all vets know about ferrets just as many don't know about birds.

You did what you could at the time. I hope you feel better soon.

My first ferret, Ozzie died about three years ago. He only had seizures, so I don't think it is the same. Ozzie only had diabetes... That's what caused the seizures and in the long run.. his death.

We could blame ourselves forever, my vet said we have to try to draw a line under it and move on. That we can go on forever with what ifs. I was more distressed  at him being so young and not sure if i did the right thing. He did sleep more but they do when they have a slight cold.
If i could go back and change things i would do it in a flash. We all would, I am sorry for your loss, ferrets are such amazing, funny characters. Like mini mischievous dogs. xxxx
