Feeling Drunk all the time

Hi,
For the past many years I've had this feeling of being drunk all the time.
It started when I was13. After a session of playing at school, I started to feel dazed and drunk, like I was in a dream. Very soon I started to have this felling ALL the time. Every single moment of every day for the last eight years. Initially I was very worried and complained to my parents and family doctor but to no avail. I learnt to ignore this feeling. But not any more. This condition has adversely affected my studies. I have become physically and mentally inactive. A simple task of reading is a challenge.
Things around me don't fell real...like in a dream. I've visited a neurologist several time and even had an MRI scan and various blood tests. All were normal.I'm really frustrated and confused. I'll be very grateful if someone could at least diagnose this condition.

I've been permanently drunk for 14 years now, 24/7. Been to every specialist. Their answer is always "Hmm, I've never heard of that". Here have some anti-depressants, which I've been taken all this time (many kinds) and none of them help. In fact, every year, it gets progressively worse.

Wow that's a lot of responses. Sorry for not replying but life got in the way. And by life I mean more anxiety depression and derealization but I believe I've finally found the cause of my problems- my gut! I've had chronic health issues since I was a kid- digestive issues, chronic fatigue, asthma, psoriasis and eventually derealization, anxiety and depression. Mind you, derealization is nothing but the brain's response to extreme anxiety I've heard. I have indisputable evidence that my messed up gut has caused all the health issues I've ever had.

So since I posted this many years ago I've tried many many things- medication, therapy, neurofeedback therapy, meditation, sauna etc. but only one approach has helped- changing my diet. It seemed like my anxiety and depression just got worse and worse and I was willing to try anything. One thing that caught my attention was Jordan Peterson's remarks on the Joe Rogan podcast about how changing his diet helped with his anxiety, depression, psoriasis and fatigue. His daughter encouraged him to go on the diet since it got rid of her arthritis! So since the beginning of 2018 I started experimenting with diet- low carb, high fat eliminating gluten, milk and soya. Within a couple of weeks I felt BETTER THAN I'VE FELT IN FIFTEEN YEARS! I was shocked. My anxiety, depression, derealization and psoriasis vanished! But then I ate something wrong (something with milk and later something with soya) and everything came back! I've been up and down ever since. This is the picture I get so far- I'm allergic to certain foods i.e. they cause inflammation in my system and this inflammation manifests itself psoriasis in the body and depression/anxiety/derealization in the mind. Remove these foods=good mental health. It's surprisingly simple.

I'm still in the process of figuring out exactly what foods I'm allergic to and I'm currently on an all beef diet (Just like Jordan Peterson and his daughter Mikhaila) and it's going great! My brain fog is slowly disappearing and I can concentrate much better on my work! If any of you have digestive or autoimmune issues PLEASE look into your diet! Here are two good places to start- http://mikhailapeterson.com and google the GAPS diet and the work of Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride.

Good luck!

Hi, so I have a lot of the symptoms mentioned on this thread for almost 10 years, and I am willing to try your diet.
There are now two years since you wrote this comment, how is it going? Was diet the only issue? Do you believe that anyone with similar symptoms should try it?

Other than that, did you find anything else worth mentioning?

Thanks in advance.

I started having these symptoms especially the DEREALIZATION /DEPERSONALIZATION  ones. I read many forums including this one many of times and researched for many hours to find out what was going on. I hope my story will help someone else who is searching for the same answer I was.
I am a 23 year old male 6'3'' weighing 260. I had a busted blood vessel in my eye and went to get it check out by my PCP, they told me it was due to my high BP which was 175/110. They prescribed me with 10mg of Amlodipine, my ankles started swelling after a week so they gave me 12.5mg of HCTZ for the swelling. About 2 weeks into the meds I started having panic attacks, Anxiety, Insomnia, DEREALIZATION, twitching eye lid Headaches, Zoning out, felt drunk all the time. My symptoms were worse when I was driving and at night time. Also when I was in a visually complex environment like Lowe's, Wal-Mart and malls. I didn't know what was going on, my PCP ordered an EKG, MRI of my brain, Blood work, everything came back fine. I also went to an ENT doctor and also an Aphthalmologist they both said everything was fine. So, I was stuck at this point in my life I felt horrible like I was going insane, I knew I was my normal self but it didn't feel like I was mentally. I went and had another appointment with my PCP and I was prescribed 10mg of Lexapro for anxiety. Well, at this point I did as the doctors told my not to do, I went online and researched my symptoms, there were many things it could be that was relevant to my symptoms.  Then I decided to look up side effects of the medication I was on because I didn't feel this way before I was diagnosed with high BP. As I read more and more reviews on Amlodipine I saw that people were suffering with the same symptoms as I had. So, I stopped taking the Amlodipine and HCTZ I started feeling better about 2 weeks later but I was not fully recovered. It has been about a month now and I feel so much better, still not fully there but it is much more manageable then it was a month ago. I changed my diet and started exercising more and I now weigh 243 I check my BP everyday and when I am resting my BP varies between 120/70 - 145/77. I also am going to start researching plants and herbs that can lower BP naturally so I do not have to deal with side effects. My purpose in writing this review is to help the next person who is experiencing the same thing I went through and are searching for answers stay strong and just look forward that this will go away at some point. A few tips that helped me with the anxiety part and derealization were, laying in bed listening to relaxing music, get a diffuser, they have oils that help with anxiety. Keep your mind distracted I went on bike rides. (This was over a course of 4 months that I was on the medicine and It has been roughly a month since I have been fully off all BP medicine.)

I had read cases of people who could not properly digest wheet.  The wheet remained in their stomach and started to ferment causing alcohol to be created.  I would look into that.

I know this is old now, but has anyone here tried parasite cleansing? Parasites,  and the one in talking about - ascaris,  live in the small intestine and eat all your nutrients and excreting toxins (aka - their s***, causing you to feel drunk). I'm sure everyone here is not only feeling drunk, but also really disabling anxiety out of nothing, feelings of disassociation from the world, inability to concentrate, almost like you have full blown ADHD,  moodiness, maybe even tinnitus, and from all of this - depression it's caused from the toxins aggrevating the CNS. Also I saw someone saying that they are anemic - that's a classic sign. I've read in a lot of places where autism, schizophrenia, chronic fatigue syndrome, other chronic conditions and auto-immune disorders all healing after doing parasite cleanses. Parasites, especially not in a huge number may cause no physical discomfort other than an occasional diarrhea, constipation, nausea that can be written off to something you ate. %95 of serotonin receptors are in the gut, so there's a good reason to look into it. Also if the infestation has been in you for longer than a few weeks, eosinophilia will not be seen as the body has become accustomed to its new friend/s. (this has not been confirmed from experts, but what has been confirmed is that not all parasitic infestations cause eosinophilia, so that is not a dependent parameter to be counting on for the diagnosis). Stool tests are not a dependent format of diagnosis as well, because, they have a %10 success rate and even doctors agree on that. I've have heard of people giving whole parasites for testing and it came back negative. That's a trend I'm seeing in all of us, that all of our tests are clear, yet we feel sick and start questioning our own mental health. I didn't want to seem like a hypochondriac so the idea of parasites was ridiculous until I attempted to fix my dysbiosis with probiotics and a slight change in my normal diet 3 days later I passed tapeworm segments in my stool after the average troubled sleep since all of this started. That put me in the track of parasites. I have been on medication and am currently in the process of healing although I haven't finished my course yet. Now I'm sure most of you here are desperate for relief, just as I was, but when I'm cured I will have no interest in posting here just like a lot of people that have went through this. Now even if it isn't parasites, there is no harm done in trying to cleanse. The worst thing that can happen is that you will get a mood and energy boost, which for some people will be enough to get out of their slump and get their life back in order. I recommend cutting sugars out of your diet for a little while and eat a lot of garlic. If you're into organic food, try tinctures, but I will go the pharma way and go with Vermox (mebendazole) and later will finish off with the Gubarev eucalyptus enema protocol. It has been patented in Russia as a medicinal technique with proof of its effectiveness, its the one that has cured allergies, schizophrenia, chronic fatigue syndrome and etc. You can search more about parasite cleansing on the Internet as I'm not promoting any products, just techniques you can use to help yourselves. Now I'm not saying that the cause for all of the diseases in the world is from parasites, I do acknowledge that the human body as such a complex machine, is due to have malfunctions, but some of us are given some absurd sounding and rare diagnosis. Can we all really be that unlucky or is there a more deeper, but more common and easily treatable cause that is just flaring up and masking itself as something else? Wish you all who are reading this - success and health and the energy to get through this. I know it looks like an unescapable nightmare, but hang in there!
P. S. I made an account just to post this and try to make someone else's life better because I knew how low I was and I'm trying to continue with this information in the hopes for someone to find relief!

( For those who found no relation of their symptoms to an illness)

I have come to realise that the problem is mental not physical, which is why tests don't show up anything serious or an illness that can be directly related to these symptoms. The symptoms however can be directly related to depersonalisation and derealisation, which more and more people nowadays describe going through without knowing about it. I have gone through this myself luckily for a few months only and did tests and looked for the reason this could be happening with no luck at first. Other people I know who have been going through this say they can pinpoint exactly the day it started and that they have never been the same since then. It trully is like this because you enter another state of mind.

Feeling like being in a dream- like state, dazed, confusion are all symptoms of dp/dr and are not linked to a physical illness. Basically depersonalisation is a state of mind that for some reason people enter and with it there's confusion that brings frustration and exhaustion so much that you just want to lay down and feel intoxicated or have visual disturbances like snow or floaters that are not a problem of the eyes its like mild hallucinations. Some get really anxious because everything around them feels so weird its nauseous. I know this sounds crazy and most likely I'm not good at explaining it, but these symptoms especially when they have to do with feelings of unreality or being in a dream have to do with depersonalisation.  I am not claiming to have diagnosed every person here but for those who have taken all sorts of tests and found nothing perhaps they should read more about this.

I too have been feeling horribly drunk for 10 months. Have gone through MRIs, blood tests, neuro tests, vestibular test etc, etc. I've been on amitryptiline, topiramate and beta blockers, all were no help but had awful side effects. My life is in free fall. My diagnosis is vestibular migraine and my treatment has just been changed by a new doctor. I am now going to be taking 400mg vitamin B2 daily and having vestibular physiotherapy, whatever that may involve. This new doctor explained that the reason I feel so easily confused and forgetful is this. The brain receives three sets of messages to give us our spatial awareness:- what we can see, our balance from our ears and the effect of gravity on our joints and ligaments. With this kind of migraine none of these are matching up. Our logical brain is constantly have to kind of sort it out and this is why we are feeling drunk. The brain is so taken up with the business of just functioning competently in space that anything else is quite a struggle. It made sense to me and I did feel better after talking to her. I shall let you all know how the new treatment regime goes. Apparently it can take a while to show results and there is a bit of a waiting list for the physio. Watch this space. Feeling hopeful....

Hi, I have had many or all of the same symptoms and has had the same problem Mr. Jacobdv had/has with my family and doctors not believing me. Last week my dizziness got so bad I couldn't walk without help, so I was rushed to the hospital. The doctors at the hospital finally saw lesions in my brain and spine many scans and years later. The brain and spine leisons turned out to be inflation. The doctors diagnosed it as Multiple Sclorosis or (MS). As of today there is no cure but there is a treatment that can help control the MS. For those wondering what MS is, it's a disease that attacks the nervous system and blocks/damages certain signals to the parts of the body that aren't fully functional. The blocked signals also might lead to numbness or tingling to parts of body making it feel like you're being picked with pins and needles. I was told that a person could have this disease for many years without knowing until it hits you all at one time. Well I hope this was helpful! Ask your doctors about MS if you any questions

I had same issues.  The MRI, bloodwork, neurology, and all other tests came out just fine.   I went to a psychiatrist.  She specialized in derealization/depersonalization.  She prescribed clomipramine.  I felt better in a few weeks.  It was completely gone in few months.  I ended up taking the medication for a little bit more than a year and then weaned off it.

Hi people, finally I found a place where someone will probably understand me. I started to fell pretty similar to you all since more or less than a year and a half, since then, my life has change dramatically. I used to be very alerted and focused, but since this weird brain fog started, I'm not that person anymore, I'm currently suffering of lack of concentration and focus, and easily forget things. I need to repeat complex tasks several times in order to learn how to do them, the manager of my new job warned me once of getting dismissed if I continue like that. I'm felling helpless, I've tried nootropics, testosterone and recently had an appointment with a neurologist who didn't see anything abnormal. Sometimes it gets better, sometimes worst. It is a feeling as if I where drunk all the day long, it's horrible, and I'm not even wanting to socialise with people anymore due the fact that I'm not able to follow the conversation entirely, just the same as if you were drunk. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get my brain back. I'm not depressed or stressed, I can sense the difference of my stage and the ones I mentioned. If a specialist could clarify this and help me through, I would be very thankful!!!

Hi All,

I had very similar symptoms for 11 months, and had all sorts of tests including ECG, MRI's, Blood test etc. My main symptom was feeling slightly drunk and off balance all of the time, and very foggy.

I tried various things over the period, and things have finally started to improve now for me, due to:

1) Improved neck/head alignment and posture - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OaPnNJs93Ts
2) Magnesium sulphate supplements
3) A hot water bottle on my mid / upper back every night for at least an hour.

I put my symptoms down to an issue with a lack of blood flow to the back of my head / neck, due to tight muscles.

I hope this works for you - Please let me know how you get on, and spread the message if it works.

Regards
Harry

Hey, did you find something out?
I only just started having this kind of sensation, and the timing couldn't have been worse, because I soon have exams, and I have to be really quick, and remember a whole lot of stuff for them. I am so nervous...I'd love to hear if you have anything new on your situation.

I have the same symptoms. Almost all the time now, I feel like I'm tipsy, dizzy and confused. I can't focus my thoughts and it's hard to focus my eyes. I am forgetful and slower mentally. I even wake up with a slight taste of alcohol in my mouth when I haven't been drinking. Menopause can account for some of the confusion and forgetfulness, but not the other symptoms.

In researching online today, I read about Endogenous ethanol production, recently discovered and also called auto-brewery syndrome. In it's full blown state, the sufferer actually gets drunk from yeast fermentation in the gut.

I've scheduled an appointment with my doctor, but in the meantime, I'm going to try cutting out all foods that turn into simple sugars.

I'll keep you posted.

Decided to comment since this reaches all the way to 2015 with the hopes that people are still reading..

I've had a myriad of blood tests done and nothing. I am anemic but I take iron and it does not improve the drunk feeling. My latest attempt at getting rid of this feeling is trying a gluten free diet. Gluten intolerance frequently pops up when I try to search this feeling. I'm two weeks into it and going to try for a while to see if anything changes. I've noticed digestive changes already but no brain change yet.

One other thing that has been popping up in my searches lately in Meniere's Disease. Sounds like what a lot of people are describing here. Has anyone heard of/looked into this one?

Anyway, hoping people will update if they find a cause or solution.
