Identical Twins after 5-day transfer

So when I discussed doing a 5-day transfer with my FS, he told me that blasts have a higher chance of splitting into identical twins.

I did a 5-day transfer of one blast...

and yesterday I got my first beta back and it is a bit high (maybe??? 614) ... and so I started looking again at the info online and I found information saying there IS a higher rate of identicals with 5DT and there is NOT a higer risk.... oh, the internet is so helpful!

Anyone have a personal experience with identicals after a 5-day transfer?

Well. like I said it happened 2x's at my clinic last year : )    If I had to place a bet, I would say twins... but, again, no one will know until the u/s!!! : )

Anything is possible.

Here are two girls that are pregnant with identical twins.  You can look them up & ask what there beta's were.   Globetrot  & waitn838 (prego with twin boys)

Best of luck to you.

the first one was 11 days past transfer and so today's was 14 DPT.

I know! I am still thinking maybe/maybe not... but then I read some crazy study that said in their study, women with betas over 600, 100% had twins. but nothing is certain til the U/S.

Thanks for the support, everyone!

@ AnnieBrooke, I'm sorry for your loss. That is so sad. I am genuinely hoping it is a singleton, and I thought the number was sort of normalish and "solid" until some other folks started telling me it seemed high. But you're right the rise will be more telling and nothing will be more telling than the ultrasound.

@mhv and worththewait78, phew! glad to hear that it seems to be very uncommon. I will stop fretting about it and just see what happens. It seems more likely that it will be one! :)

Thanks again, ladies!

We did IVF two times.  Both times we just transferred one five day blast.  The first time it didn't take.  The second time (our frozen cycle) it did take and we only got pregnant with the one little singleton.  Our RE said that he's only seen it happen once in his 15 year career (where a 5 day blast splits into twins).  So I think it's not too common.  Also, your hcg level numbers alone won't tell you if you're having twins or not.  My levels were SUPER high and people kept telling me, "Maybe you're cooking TWO buns in that oven of yours!" ;)  But alas, my 6 week ultrasound showed just the one baby.

Good luck!!

j614 is a nice strong #!  We'll see what it is on your second blood draw... some have had #'s that high and had twins, others singletons.  I think the second blood draw will tell more maybe, but again not always.  Only the u/s will tell for sure.  jennlaurin80 has identical twin boys : )   You could ask her!  And globetrot is pregnant with identials right now : )   CarlaLP has monotwins (egg split, one sac) and the were born a few weeks ago.  One is pretty sick (liver) but, I believe he will be just fine...

The nurse at my RE's office said it happen to them 2x's last year... they put in 2 blasts, each time, and 1 of the blasts split in each case.  The mom of one had 3 boys, the other 3 girls.

You don't want to know my experience of identicals after a 5-day transfer, I think.  I hasten to say that my RE said it is very very rare; he had only seen it twice in 20 years of doing IVF.

I had a blast split after the transfer, giving us identical twins.  The problem is the lateness of the split; there are only about 8 or 9 days when an embryo can safely split (I think by day 8, there is a high risk of an incomplete split, i.e., conjoined twins).  My twins died of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome at 9 weeks gestation, it was the saddest thing I ever had to deal with in my life, I think, besides the day I faced the fact that there were no more chances for us to have another baby.

There is a procedure that can be done in utero if you do have twins with twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, but it can't be done as early as 9 weeks.  If you find yourself in this situation, read up on it and be ready to move fast.

I don't think, however, 614 is that notably high.  Don't sweat over that number alone ... see the rate of rise, that is much more telling than the number itself.  If your numbers really race up (more than double in 48 hours), you might have twins.
